Summary
In 1985, Peter Everett landed the job as Superintendent of Southwark Mortuary. In just six years he’d gone from lowly assistant to running the UK’s busiest murder morgue. He couldn’t believe his luck.
What he didn’t know was that Southwark, operating in near-Victorian conditions, was a hotbed of corruption. Attendants stole from the dead, funeral homes paid bribes, and there was a lively trade in stolen body parts and recycled coffins.
Set in the fascinating pre-DNA and psychological profiling years of 1985-87, this memoir tells a gripping and gruesome tale, with a unique insight into a world of death most of us don’t ever see. Peter managed pathologists, oversaw post mortems and worked alongside Scotland Yard’s Murder Squad - including on the case of the serial killer, the Stockwell Strangler.
This is a thrilling tale of murder and corruption in the mid-1980s, told with insight and compassion.

Unexpectedly brilliant listen
Stumbled on this in the plus catalogue and it is brilliant.
I remember this court case in the 80s, about the mortuary in south London where the dodgy dealings of the employees led to a number of prosecutions and stringent laws coming into place.
Peter Everett describes his taking over the mortuary and rooting out these dodgy employees and then subsequently turning it around.
The chapters focus on the above but also he talks of the various cases he has handled as well as working with the forensic pathologists. So it becomes like an episodes of the TV series Silent witness.
If you like true crime, you will love it

disrespectful language towards the dead
The way it was written and narrated is something to be desired. The description of the bodies and deaths was disrespectful and rude.... "the stinkers," "the metal slabs," "the fridges." Of all the books on pathology I've read... this is the worst. Narrator not suitable for the type of book that this is. Sorry For Your Loss is much better! or any book written by Dr Richard Shepherd.

Great book..narration weird!
Such an interesting book with some fascinating stories & pieces of history. Some very sad & heart breaking tales too. The narrator was so odd though & I thought wrong for this book - too flippant & jovial, as if were all a bit of a joke. Wish I had read it instead of listening to it but once I started, I couldn’t stop so couldn’t have been that bad!

interesting book narration flippant
I enjoyed the book however the narrative made the book seem uncaring/flippant despite reading the passages as written , artistic license made it as though author didn’t care or was of an era of old school comedy.

If the genre is your cup of tea then I’m confident you’ll enjoy this audiobook, I know I certainly did. I appreciated how authenticity the book was written and particularly enjoyed hearing of how corruption was rife within the system and what was done about it. A wholly fascinating book.

Interesting and Fascinating
Amazing to listen to the story of a career of a pathologist, what life is like as someone who completes postmortems. Really fascinating, would definitely recommend.
