Summary

A darkly comic novel from the bestselling, Women’s Prize shortlisted author of The Portable Veblen.

Penny Rush has problems. Freshly divorced from her mobile knife-sharpener husband, she has returned home to Santa Barbara to deal with her grandfather, who is being moved into a retirement home by his cruel second wife. Her grandmother, meanwhile, has been found in possession of a sinister sounding weapon called ‘the scintilltor’ and something even worse in her woodshed. Penny’s parents have been missing in the Australian outback for many years now, and so Penny must deal with this spiralling family crisis alone.

Enter The Dog of the North. The Dog of the North is a borrowed van, replete with yellow gingham curtains, wood panelling, a futon, a pinata, clunky brakes and difficult steering. It is also Penny’s getaway car from a failed marriage, a family in crisis and an uncertain future. This darkly, dryly comic novel follows Penny as she sets out in The Dog to find a way through the curveballs life has thrown at her and in doing so, find a way back to herself.

Critic reviews

"Even funnier, even more romantic than McKenzie's wonderful last, The Portable Veblen. You will be surprised, delighted, and grateful to be aboard The Dog of the North with the admirable Penny Rush as she faces every challenge her wild and crazy family can throw at her. A book that lifts the spirits." (Karen Joy Fowler, author of We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves)

A proper story - I loved it

I thoroughly enjoyed this unusual story. The characters are extraordinary but so relatable. Love the author’s style and imagination.

Ignore the bad reviews, this a little gem of a book

Full of very eccentric characters, lovely little story and great narration. I want to know more.

do not waste your time or money

This book is so bad it makes you wonder if the jury of Women's Prize is corrupted...
Through the entire book I was wondering what it's really about as the main character wonders from one absurd situation to another. I think it was supposed to be funny but unfortunately wasn't, not even a bit...

Brilliant book

This was an absolute pleasure to listen to. There is not one dull second, the characters are completely perfect, the narration is wonderful & the narrator has the perfect voice and expression. The main character is a joy; in fact all the characters are a joy. I wish I was at the beginning and only just starting this superb book. Enjoy your listen to this entertaining story which does not disappoint.

Brilliant

Wonderful, deep, wildly funny novel read with grace and gusto. I love the way her novels invite us to think about our relationships with each other, our fellow species, and the environment. Dazzling.

wildly chaotic, deeply engaging, fantastical caper

This fast-moving fantastical story works so well because the characters are well drawn, nuanced, contradictory and unpredictable, just like the most interesting people in real life are. It ended too quickly, I wasn't ready to leave the characters yet, they're still living in my head.

Quirky road trip/family drama

Quirky road trip and family drama brought to life by Katherine Littrell’s facility with American and Australian accents. Psychological undertones add to the interest.
