Summary

The inside story of the four years when Donald Trump went to war with Washington, from the chaotic beginning to the violent finale, told by revered journalists Peter Baker of The New York Times and Susan Glasser of The New Yorker—an ambitious and lasting history of the full Trump presidency that also contains dozens of exclusive scoops and stories from behind the scenes in the White House, from the absurd to the deadly serious.

The bestselling authors of The Man Who Ran Washington argue that Trump was not just lurching from one controversy to another; he was learning to be more like the foreign autocrats he admired.

The Divider brings us into the Oval Office for countless scenes both tense and comical, revealing how close we got to nuclear war with North Korea, which cabinet members had a resignation pact, whether Trump asked Japan’s prime minister to nominate him for a Nobel Prize and much more. The book also explores the moral choices confronting those around Trump—how they justified working for a man they considered unfit for office, and where they drew their lines.

The Divider is based on unprecedented access to key players, from President Trump himself to cabinet officers, military generals, close advisers, Trump family members, congressional leaders, foreign officials and others, some of whom have never told their story until now.

Great so far

Only two chapters in but alarmed by their continual assertion that Trump was and is a billionaire. Surely by time of press they were aware of his highly inflated wealth. I would expect better from the tr wp best placed writers.

Terrifying compendium

Although much of the startling reportage has appeared previously in various forms, this is a horrifying reminder of what that country endured, and may again

Enlightening and shocking

Very informative and frightening how close the US and the world came to the brink with a vindictive, childish, narcassist in a position of great power. Hopefully the future finds Trump in jail.

Gripping first take of History

The late editor of the Washington Post Ben Bradley used to say 'journalism is the first take of history' and this audiobook falls into that category. Written by husband and wife team Peter Baker and Susan Glasser, who also wrote a wonderful book on James A. Baker III, this is the first work which covers the entirety of the Trump Presidency rather than the 2020 election or specific aspects i.e russian connections.

I will admit to being unsure when purchasing this audiobook if I could endure a recounting of such a recently ended presidency and one which may yet have a sequel. But I really enjoyed the authors book on James Baker so I decided to try and was amazed by the sheer amount I had forgotten had occured, and was stunned by the level of chaos behind the scenes. This is not a screed which ignores the things Trump accomplished such as remaking the judiciary and supreme court along with tax cuts. But it is the almost cartoonish level of backbiting and scheming alongside Trump and his seemingly constant eruptions of anger at his staff which dominates this audiobook.

The narration is very well done and does not resort to cliche of Trump impressions, it is a serious work and has clearly benifited from access to many of the main members of the Trump administration including interviews with the former president himself, As a chronicle of one of the most unique and eventful presidential administrations ever this is a very good way to start.

These authors hate Trump

Never have I listened to a book that spewed so much hate, innuendo and misleading particulars as this Trump book. Be aware: these authors experienced the BLM Riots as ‘Mostly Peaceful Protests’, 2 billion dollars in damages, be damned. This book is a ‘I Hate Trump’ book.

An expertly guided tour through history.

I laughed, nearly cried, was made uneasy, and remembered the anxiety reliving the years chronicled in this book. Some details were surprising, making circumstances better understood. Thank you for the plain facts. I’ll refer to this book often.

Interesting read

If you ignore some of the speculation about motives and the chapter on mental health, it seems a well researched but one sided piece about Trump's presidency. In retrospect, it sounds like a lot of chaos during the first years. There were some pieces I wasn't aware of. It was, more importantly, an interesting read.

The Complete Story

Other books on this subject have told part of the story. This book tells the complete story of how Trump's dishonesty and incompetence nearly destroyed this country's democracy and came close to starting a middle east war. For people that consider facts important this book is a must read.

Great book, but the pronunciation is bad

It’s a long book, well-written and researched, yet the narrator has a terrible habit of mis-pronouncing many of the key names in the text. What takes me out is that these are names we all know precisely because of the history covered in this book. It is jarring and comes off as unrehearsed and indifferent.

He IS the worst ever to live in the White House!

We all knew it was bad, and we all know now how close to the edge he took us.

Fantastic Overview of Appalling POTUS

I thought I'd read & heard it all when it came to the incoherence, insanity, and absolute malevolence of Trump and his administration. To my horror, The Divider filled in still further details of this absolute sh*tshow of a presidency. Many of these events have been reported upon previously, in real time, but are fleshed out even further in this book. Frankly I'm amazed our country held together during Trump’s tenure with such an incautious, incurious, and totally self-involved buffoon at the helm. Many of his cabinet members and staff weren't much better. Some, like Bannon, Kushner, and Stephen Miller were FAR worse. My primary takeaway from this excellent book: between 2017-2021, the USA was held together with scotch tape, old string, and chewed bubble gum. The authors were fair and did discuss the GOP policies that passed, and gave Trump credit for the handful of reasonable ideas/policies he advocated for. Every diehard MAGA should read or listen to The Divider. How anyone defends this presidency as successful, I have no idea. Trump’s family, party, friends, circle of hangers-on, presidency & post-presidency are all dumpster fires. Heaven forbid any of these characters get near the Oval Office again.

Too obvious

People seem to forget that that 2 years ago we could afford to put gas in our car, buy groceries, buy a house, save some of our money, make money on our 401k, not run our credit cards to the hilt to pay for necessities...Lord, I miss Trump!

More Leftist Garbage

This more Leftist garbage brought to you by the same people who rejected 2016 election results and contend anyone who even has a doubt about the 2020 election is a terrorist.

a struggle

narrator was robotic & disconnected at 1st. I thought it was an AI text to speech thing. I'm only partway thru, but am struggling to keep interest due to the monotone voice & it seems to jump around a lot. I have to reverse often to figure out how 1 thing connected to another.
