Summary

From the author of the number one New York Times best seller This Town, the eyewitness account of how the GOP collaborated with Donald Trump to transform Washington’s “swamp” into a gold-plated hot tub - and a onetime party of rugged individualists into a sycophantic personality cult.

In the early months of Trump’s candidacy, the Republican Party’s most important figures, people such as Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, and Lindsey Graham, were united - and loud - in their scorn and contempt. Even more, in their outrage: Trump was a menace and an affront to our democracy. Then, awkwardly, Trump won.

Thank You for Your Servitude is Mark Leibovich’s unflinching account of the moral rout of a major American political party, tracking the transformation of Rubio, Cruz, Graham, and their ilk into the administration’s chief enablers, and the swamp’s lesser lights into frantic chasers of the grift. What would these politicos do to preserve their place in the sun, or at least the orbit of the spray tan? What would they do to preserve their “relevance”? Almost anything, it turns out. Trump’s savage bullying of everyone in his circle, along with his singular command of his political base, created a dangerous culture of submission in the Republican Party. Meanwhile, many of the most alpha of the lapdogs happily conceded to Mark Leibovich that they were “in on the joke”. As Lindsey Graham told the author, his supporters in South Carolina generally don’t read The New York Times, and they won’t read this book, either. All that cynicism, shading into nihilism, led to a country truly unhinged from reality and to the events of January 6, 2021. It’s a vista that makes the Washington of This Town seem like a comedy of manners in comparison.

Thank You for Your Servitude isn’t another view from the Oval Office: It’s the view from the Trump Hotel. We can check out any time we want, but only time will tell if we can ever leave.

Excellent Account of an Incomprehensible Era

Leibovich does a first rate job of relating what future historians will surely regard as the most surreal and just plain stupid event in American history - the rise of Trump and his mindless MAGA cult. The larger issue is that the damage done by this toxic clown to American democracy, political institutions, and society is incalculable and probably irreparable. There is a very real question as to whether the USA will cease to be a functioning democracy beyond the 2024 election and will instead have lurched into a Trumpian autocracy. Who among us ever thought we'd think such a thing possible? Strange, scary times.

ALL the Stars!!!!!

This book was SO SO good!! I am a conservative leaning independent, or “center right”, who has vowed to NEVER EVER vote for ANY Republican who has supported, enabled or supplicated to the raving lunatic that is Donald Trump!!!! Republicans have sold their souls to Trump. I truly believe it is because they are cowards—afraid of the crazed, fevered mob they have created, and afraid of losing their own power. I will continue to vote Democrat—it’s the only way I can keep the vomit from rising up inside me, which happens every single time I think about the “GOP”-their cowardice, hypocrisy and enabling of a man they KNOW will destroy us all disgusts me in every way. This book is amazing!!!!! The author doesn’t spare any of the groveling jerks, he lays open their loss of dignity for the world to see!! Well done!!!

Chef’s kiss

Fantastic! I would recommend to anyone who has even a passing interest in politics. Plenty of humor infused with the horror of the Trump years. Not at all dry like other political tomes.

I would listen again

the book was well written and the story was great. part s made me laugh even though I don't think it was the intended purpose. I thought the author and by extension the narrator did a good job of really distilling all the events and ideas that essentially gave rise to Trump and the ensuring chaos .

Laugh out loud funny, scary and sad

Loved this book. Narrator was perfect. I laughed, wanted to cry and scream with frustration at the people who enable the former guy. In the end I just feel incredibly sad. I hope we do better.

Better than your average Trump book.

I had told myself that I would not waste another credit on a book about Trump and his toadies. After seeing some of the reviews I figured this one might be different. Same basic story but it was told with a satirical twist. It would be almost funny if it were not about a rather sad story.

An Entertaining Primer on the Distruction of USA

An Entertaining Primer on the Distruction of DEMOCRACY. Great beach read for a Nation on the brink of an ATHORATRERIAN NIGHTMARE. Listen UP, GOP you will be remembered as the party who gave up all ethics and morality...and enabled the next dictator to rise to POWER.

Even a Joke of a President Deserves a Chuckle

I enjoyed the subtle, sarcastic twist this book offered. It presented a well developed chronological recap of the destructive and self-serving “leadership” of Trump’s presidency and the negative influence that spread like a deadly virus, and still continues to divide and destroy
our political system and society today! It allowed me to temporarily snicker at the mockery used to retell the years that still anger, upset and scare me about the damage that poor excuse for a president did… and continues to do to this country.
