Summary

It is 1999, and someone is slaughtering young black women in Burdon County, Arkansas.

But no one wants to admit it, not in the Dirty South.

In an Arkansas jail cell sits a former NYPD detective, stricken by grief. He is mourning the death of his wife and child and searching in vain for their killer. He cares only for his own lost family.

But that is about to change....

Witness the becoming of Charlie Parker.

Neat insert into the early Parker timeline.

Well researched & well told, a satisfying yarn that fits credibly into the Parker sequence.

Can’t get enough of this series !!!

Brilliant prose..brilliant narration..seamlessly slotted in as a pre sequel..just love John Connolly books ..for an Irish writer..his research of American history and geography is second to none…just in awe 🫢!!

Back to basics - in the best way possible

Loved this book, and it came at the perfect time in the series too. Superbly written and equally performed, it fills in a bit of time line left until now, untold whilst delivering some vintage Parker dIalogue and some familiar faces.

Fabulous throwback for Charlie Parker

The Charlie Parker books are amongst my absolute favourites and this one has made me love them even more. A brilliant insight into Charlie in the months following the death of his wife and daughter. Really opens up his mindset. Also great to see an early appearance from Angel and Louis. If ever I’m in trouble, these are the guys I want on my side. Narrator was excellent and no silly accents to ruin my listen on this one. First class.

Great story superbly narrated

a blast from parkers past, with a small cameo role for Louis and Angel. set after 'Every dead thing its a tale of local politics greed and moral depravity. Narration was just perfect

Overly long

Because it’s about another loner searching for justice and both are narrated by Jeff Harding it occasionally feels like you’re listening to a Jack Reacher novel, except more trouble seems to meet Reacher. Entertaining none the less.

Excellent

Love Parker, love Connolly, love Harding.
I wasn’t sure about a “prequel”, but don’t know now why I had any doubt. Sheer class.
