About this listen

The first three novels in the critically acclaimed DS Jack Townsend series, written by the author of the international best-selling Sam Pope series...

The thrills being with THE DEAD OF NIGHT, as DS Townsend arrives in Buckinghamshire after relocating from Merseyside with his family. Thrust into the Thames Valley Police's Specialist Crime Unit, he finds himself investigating the murder of a young woman. But when a second body is found, Townsend and the SCU realise they are hunting a serial killer.

DON'T SAY A WORD finds Townsend and the SCU investigating a seemingly obvious overdose. But when the victim is found to be missing his tongue, they soon realise the murder was staged as a suicide. And the killer has a motive and a kill list that they are hellbent on completing.

And lastly, NO JUDGE, NO JURY sees the SCU face their most harrowing case yet. A local doctor is murdered in cold blood. Soon after, a threat arrives that the execution will be uploaded to the internet for the world to see. And with no way to stop it, and with the promise of more executions to follow, Townsend and the team face a race against time to save the lives of those who are marked for death.

In general i liked this book. However there are far too many Americanisms for a series of novels set in the UK, about a British police man, written by a British author.

Twisty plot

The narrator is good and has a good range of accents although children is not his best.

The story… the actual investigation is good and I enjoyed it. But the relationships both with work colleagues and family is over done. To the point I was cringing at how over the top it is. Be prepared for a lot of talk of bonds and pride in his daughter and the amazingly perfect wife. No one is perfect the author seems to have forgotten that.

I’m really torn on this one.

What an odd book, on the one hand such awful crimes and on the other boring, sugary relationships. The crimes storyline had great potential if written in a different way. It might have all sounded different to me if the narration was not so strongly accented and the child's voices not so screechy; there were also word mispronunciations. The relationships between husband, wife, daughter, colleagues were so sugary and unreal and seemed to be lengthier in the narrative than the actual crimes in this crime novel. I fast forwarded over the sickly bits in the chapters. The crime part of the book was a lot more interesting, and could have been refined into a very good crime story - unfortunately, the sugary relationships seemed to belong to a different author and genre than the one who wrote about these crimes.

STORY and NARRATION

These are great stories with an excellent range of characters. I found the narrator very difficult to listen to. Certain phrases were mumbled together. I looked up Lee Beddow and found he is a well known and well respected audio book narrator. I tried speeding up the reading and slowing it down. It made no difference to my listening experience.
The stories are really good with an accurate portrayal of High Wycombe and the surrounding area. Characters are well researched and ring very true.
Shame I found it so difficult to listen to.

Great book spoilt by narrators diction.

This was an excellent listen certainly enhanced by the fact that the main guy shares my accent! Well written story with a nice balance between DS Townsend's work and home life as he builds his relationship not only with his colleagues but more importantly his daughter and wife. I am halfway through book 2 in the series and look forward to book 3 with great anticipation.
Enjoy.

Scouser done good!!!

The narrator can make of break a good book and believe me this narrator is BAD, I think children's books are more his mark, but combine bad writing, weak story line and a bad narrator and this is what we have here. Do not bother wasting a credit on these sorry tales

Totally Rubbish
