Summary

The stunning novel from the New York Times best-selling author of The Age of Odin, in which the worlds of Arthur Conan Doyle and H.P. Lovecraft collide

It is the autumn of 1910, and for 15 long years, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson have battled R’lluhloig, the Hidden Mind that was once Professor James Moriarty. Europe is creeping inexorably towards war, and a more cosmic conflict is nearing its zenith, as in a single night all the most eminent members of the Diogenes Club die horribly, seemingly by their own hands. Holmes suspects it is the handiwork of a German spy working for R’lluhloig, but his search for vengeance costs an old friend his life.

The companions retreat to Holmes’s farm on the Sussex Downs, and it is not long before a client comes calling. Three young women have disappeared from the nearby town of Newford, and the locals have no doubt who is responsible. For legend has it that strange amphibious creatures dwell in a city on the seabed, coming ashore every few centuries to take fresh captives. As Holmes and Watson seek out the terrifying interlopers, the scene is set for the final battle that will bring them face to face with the Sussex Sea-Devils, and perhaps with Cthulhu himself....

I loved this trilogy

I loved all three of these books, I wouldn’t want to try and explain the content, as it’s not your usual Sherlock Holmes storyline, but it is filled with the same excitement, suspense, and outcomes you would expect from the amazing Sherlock Holmes. The narrator is excellent, brilliant, in fact, and I love that he narrated all three books so you really got to feel like you know the characters. Highly recommend this trilogy. Angie

A work of art......

To have binged is to have endured and enjoyed all 3 works. More is better.

Exactly what I was hoping for!

The narrator is absolutely perfect and the story a fitting conclusion to a great trilogy.

Atmospherical and reading in keeping with the best of 'adventures for boys' for all who enjoy the genre.

Good

Third book wraps the Sherlock Holmes Cthulhu story neatly. The story is the weakest of the three but still fun.

Shokushu Holmes

Highly-entertaining conclusion to James Lovegrove's Holmes / Cthulhu mash-up trilogy. Here the narrative sets course through a tinderbox pre-WW1 Europe before taking to the high seas and the non-Euclidean geometry of dread R'lyeh, all in a fast-paced attempt to thwart the sinister machinations of a now deific Professor Moriarty. Holmes and Lovecraft pastiches are ten-a-penny but this is hugely enjoyable and well-written; the addition of tentacular cosmic horror galvanising the Great Detective's game. A talented writer, Lovegrove nods to both Doyle and Lovecraft's authorial voices, yet this most resembles the rip-roaring Boys Own style of John Buchan, which, intentional or not, works surprisingly well in balancing both elements together. The narration is excellent, too.

Good fun

Well researched, great writing, excellent performance, and a tongue in cheek at the right moments. Enjoyed the whole trilogy.

Really, Really Good!

I was at first dubious about the blending of these 2 genres. Whilst I love them both, particularly Lovecraft, the mix seemed a strange notion. However, it really worked! I picked up the first one on one of Audible's free offers, but was instantly hooked and bought the others without even waiting for my next monthly allocation. Highly recommended! ... Excellent narration too!
