About this listen

Elric and his companion Moonglum return in this prequel set within the early days of Elric's wanderings. Elric rides again to investigate the history of Melniboné and its dragons, known as the Phroon, in this exciting new addition to the Elric Saga from World Fantasy Lifetime Achievement Award winner Michael Moorcock.

The estranged emperor of the Melnibonéan empire, Elric is struggling with his nature and the constant thirst of his soul-sucking sword, Stormbringer. He wants his dying empire to thrive, but is he up to the task? Recruiting his best friend Moonglum, he hunt across his lands for the great Citadel of Forgotten Myths, seeking the answers to the nature of the phroon of The Young Kingdoms.

Taking place between the first and second book in the Elric Saga, The Citadel of Forgotten Myths is perfect for longtime fans and those new to this epic fantasy series.

It’s fascinating to see how Moorcock’s writing has and has not changed over the decades.

An interesting addition to the story of Elric

So where are all the other Moorcocks? History of the Runestaff? Dorian Hawkmoon. The eternal champion. Count Brass?

And about time

Great performance but I found the story a bit hard to engage with. It did bring back feelings of nostalgia

A long time since I read an Elric story

A brilliant surprise entry fleshing out the Elric of Melnibone series. Highly recommended! A masterful read and listen for fans of ASOIAF and any self-respecting hero with a magic sword.

An absolute gem, performed perfectly.

I've read Moorcock before, Elric particularly, so I knew what to expect. However much of this story just felt dull and pointless. It comprises 3 tales. The first takes a while to get going, but is OK in the end. The second is shorter and the best of the three, more like what you'd expect from Moorcock. The third could have been half or a third of the length. There is far too much monologuing, or "talking heads" with nothing of note actually happening. The concept of the setting and the world lore is interesting, but the main events happen right at the end of several hours of slogging through nothing of note. I almost didn't finish it.

Some good bits but boring elsewhere
