Story
In the end, it's not what happens to us that matters most - it's what we choose to do with it. We all face suffering - sadness, loss, despair, fear, anxiety, failure. But we also have a choice; to give in and give up in the face of trauma or difficulties or to live every moment as a gift. Celebrated therapist and Holocaust survivor Dr Edith Eger provides a hands-on guide that gently encourages us to change the imprisoning thoughts and destructive behaviours that may be holding us back.

This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose and my strength, but also to finding my voice in a world that didn't always see me. As I wrote Finding Me, my eyes were open to the truth of how our stories are often not given close examination. They are bogarted, reinvented to fit into a crazy, competitive, judgmental world. So I wrote this for anyone who is searching for a way to understand and overcome a complicated past, let go of shame and find acceptance.

I'm speechless but need to say something...

Summary
Random House presents the audiobook edition of The Choice by Edith Eger, read by Tovah Feldshuh with an introduction by the author.
Edith Eger was a gymnast and ballerina when she was sent to Auschwitz at the age of sixteen. There, she was made to dance for the infamous Josef Mengele. Her heroic actions helped her sister to survive, and her bunkmates to save her life, during a death march, after which she was found in a pile of bodies, barely alive. She recovered and moved to America, going on to become an eminent psychologist, and giving the keynote address at Viktor Frankl's 90th birthday party.
Like Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning, Dr Edith Eger's important book, The Choice, could change your life. Eger shares stories of the Holocaust and the experiences of her clients, who range from survivors of abuse to soldiers suffering from PTSD. She explains how many of us live within a mind that has become a prison and shows how freedom becomes possible once we confront our suffering. Warm, wise and compassionate, The Choice offers profound insights into the nature of human suffering, and our capacity to heal.

Nothing short of extraordinary-10stars...100stars!
I can hardly put into words how wonderful this audiobook is. The story itself is amazing, it is captivating and heartfelt, the combination of humility and searing honesty gives it a quality unlike many other books, it pulsates with life and heart. It is an important and inspiring tale of extraordinary triumph but it's humanity makes it very relatable, it will resonate through your own life. You will never forget it. I believe that this is one book where listening to it makes that even more true than reading.
The narration is superb, by far the very best I have ever heard. It is hard to believe the narrator is not the author. It is hard to believe she is not recounting everything while it happens. It has an intense immediacy. Her voice conjures the sense of a young girl so perfectly and as the story continues each word resonates with a truth that makes you feel she is sharing this woman's innermost journey with only you. I have been mesmerised by it, I have wanted to sit and listen to the entire thing in one go. I feel I know the character so well and that the voice that the narrator has lent her will stay with me. This is an astonishing book and a true marvel of narration.
I should mention that I have often been put off listening to books recounting tales of war and survival for fear of being disturbed by them, you can't skip past upsetting descriptions etc so easily when listening. For anyone feeling this way, fear not, the author is in no way gratuitous or graphic with descriptions. She still captures every bit of the horror but manages to do it without traumatising the reader/listener. It is a personal story of her feelings throughout that period of the book (1/3rd) rather than a description of what went on exactly.
I cannot recommend this highly enough. I am touched and changed by it. I will always remember it. That's all I can say.

Power
This is truth revealed in words, not of religion but of learned experience. Choice is certainly a classic I would recommend to anyone who cares for positive living and good success in life.
As a faith based life coach, I couldn't have said it better. Only to add that this was always the Father's will for us, something our fallen evil nature has not and indeed cannot take away from us; the power of the will.
As it is written in the holy writ: "choose this day..."

There's so much to learn from this book.
The honest sharing of her own feelings and thoughts allowed me to appreciate the message she was trying to convey. The narrative remained compelling and I found myself both amazed at her stories while it also allows for the reader to reflect and grow with each patient she describes.
I would say her life, her stories, this book is inspirational through its honest reflections and assessments.

Absolutely breathtaking!
I finished listening to this book yesterday and still keep reliving every moment and every lesson from it.. It is that beautiful, deep, thought-provoking read which makes you see your very Life and its Meaning in a whole new light.
On her personal example Dr. Eger teaches how to embrace the You in you and work towards the Freedom within. Turns out “Work will set you free” - a cynic Nazi slogan above the Auschwitz gate - does hold its grain of truth. Not in it the terrifying, torturous way meant by the SS but in that beautiful, patient inner work one is willing to go through to discover the meaning of true Love - towards oneself and towards the world.
Also, the narration of the book provided by Tovah Feldshuh adds so much to the appreciation of it - emotional, strong, with all the right emphasis and that unique accent. It felt like listening to Dr. Eger tell her story herself.
Thank you for this amazing experience, Audible! Really recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of WW2, to the children of survivors (I’m proud to be one of them) and to anyone searching answers to the many “why”s of our lives.

Life-changing, pivotal
After our daughter drowned in Oct '20, life as I and we knew it changed forever. For 4-5 minutes she was clinically dead and in those few minutes I had too many questions and not any answers. As a working mother with a professional career, being still without my list for the day was so foreign to me. Today, by grace alone, our daughter is perfect without any psychological scars, water trauma or physical damage, but her drowning was my "The Choice"-experience. I have read this book after a 5-month sabbatical reviewing all aspects of my life. During this time, whilst attending therapy, I was diagnosed with PTSD and OCPD, not just because of this particular incident, but due to prior life events which we did not have control over. For this reason, Dr Eger's life story and the narrative spoke to my deepest being (although I have not endured half of what she had). What an inspiration! This book is for you if you feel that you are not in control despite every effort. This book is for you if you feel that you are a victim of your circumstances. This book is for you if you feel you do not have a choice in life. This book gives you the choice to choose ...
