Summary

In the gripping sequel to the Philip K. Dick Award-winning novel The Book of the Unnamed Midwife, one woman undertakes a desperate journey to rescue the future.

Etta comes from Nowhere, a village of survivors of the great plague that wiped away the world that was. In the world that is, women are scarce and childbearing is dangerous...yet desperately necessary for humankind's future. Mothers and midwives are sacred, but Etta has a different calling. As a scavenger. Loyal to the village but living on her own terms, Etta roams the desolate territory beyond: salvaging useful relics of the ruined past and braving the threat of brutal slave traders, who are seeking women and girls to sell and subjugate.

When slavers seize those she loves, Etta vows to release and avenge them. But her mission will lead her to the stronghold of the Lion - a tyrant who dominates the innocent with terror and violence. There, with no allies and few weapons besides her wits and will, she will risk both body and spirit not only to save lives but also to liberate a new world's destiny.

Awesome read

I want to thank Meg Elison for giving me hours of enjoyment while traveling to and from work. Its especially special to be able to download free from Amazon with Kindle Unlimited as it is frustrating to find quality audiobooks.
Great storyline and vivid descriptions make this series a need to read/listen.
Thanks!

a book about identity, searching and belonging

Interesting follow up from book 1, picks up hundreds of years in the future and explores a world where the journals of the unnamed midwife have become lore and legend. Follows Eddie/Etta a character struggling to find themselves and their place in this future world.

Amazing such a talented writer

The unnamed most wife and the book of Etta are an amazing piece of fiction hard to listen to at times due to the content but a clever story - the plot - imagination - the writing so skilled xxxx

Starts strong... then... meh.

Disappointed.
It's not a patch on the first book, if you ask me. Shame, because it began it so strong as well. I was really looking forward to it.
The story just kind of plodded along, and I didn't really gel with the characters.
I mean, it wasn't terrible. The writing was fine, but that's as far as it went.

Hopefully part three is a return to form, but I definitely need a break for a few weeks before going back in.
These books dig into your time.

Shame. Loved the first book

A combination of over the top dramatic performance and a story that didn’t really go anywhere was a disappointment for me. I really loved the first book and was hoping for expansion of the universe, but I thought this one got stuck in very personal themes I could not connect to.

Disappointing sequel

The first book was much better I think there was too much emphasis on what sexual preference the characters had and not enough thought put into the storyline. Shame...

Terrible sequel , DONT READ. The book should be retitled as identity crisis with a apocalyptic twist

The voice narration is brilliant but the story line of etta/Eddie seems ridiculous.
The first book , the book of the unnamed midwife is a lot better ( the unnamed midwife disguised herself a guy to protect herself *clever survival move* and the book focus on the downfall of society ) but this book is a serious miss .
It’s set in a post apocalyptic world 100 years after the first book and Etta is having a identity crisis. All she cares about is herself , there are slavers and terrible men and evil women out there in the world hurting the vulnerable but all Etta cares about is how she views herself. Is Eddie or Etta .
So If you want to read a book about a women who feels like a man sometimes and a women other times with that being the majority focus of the book go ahead .
If not please save your time and money and just read the first book alone. Treat it as a stand alone.
