Summary

From Number One Bestselling author Kathy Reichs comes the new high-stakes thriller featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan.

EVEN ON AN ISLAND PARADISE, DANGER STILL LURKS.

Called in to examine what is left of a body struck by lightning, Tempe traces an unusual tattoo to its source and is soon embroiled in a much larger case. Young men – tourists – have been disappearing on the islands of Turks and Caicos for years. Seven years ago, the first victim was found with both hands cut off; the other visitors vanished without a trace. But recently, tantalizing leads have emerged and only Tempe can unravel them.

Maddeningly, the victims seem to have nothing in common – other than the unusual locations where their bodies are eventually found, and the fact that the young men all seem to be the least likely to be involved in foul play. Do these attacks have something to do with the islands’ seething culture of gang violence? Tempe isn’t so sure. And then she turns up disturbing clues that what’s at stake may actually have global significance.

It isn’t long before the sound of a ticking clock grows menacingly loud, and then Tempe herself becomes a target.

Not your normal Tempe

Usually I cannot stop listening to Kathy Reichs' books, and was really looking forward to this one... but it is not up to her usual heart pounding moments standards.
Tempe is grumpy and boring, the killer is obvious, and the other characters are just bland... wont be listening to this one again... sorry KR, must try harder seems to be the feeling left after this book

Queen of chapter end cliff hangers

I've worked through this series following the exploits of Temperence Brennan, with many on Audible. Linda Emond is now Tempe for me. This latest has the novelty of a Caribbean setting (although the Turks and Caicos tourist board may not be delighted).
Kathy Riechs is the queen of chapter end cliff hangers. When I decided to just finish the chapter, I'm forced to go on to the next.

Love Kathy Reichs

It felt a little different to her other books, but overall really enjoyed it as always. I did find I phased out a little bit with this book and I don’t usually do that with hers but overall good story.

Not Kathy's best

I usually love Kathy Reichs books and look forward to them but this storyline just didn't grip me at all and very little forensic anthropology to provide interest.

Loved it! Thrilling and captivating as always

Couldn’t wait for this one and was not disappointed. Loved the story line. Kathy at her best.

Sadly rather tedious

I love this series, I love Temperance Brennan, but I did not love this book.
The story - such as it is - is rather weak and flimsy. It just didn’t hold my attention at all.
I also guessed the killer hours before the end. Which was disappointing. Something about this plot seemed rushed - maybe juvenile even.
Sorry - will read next book - but won’t reread this one. Yawn.

Not her best

I’ve been a KR fan for many years and have read all of her TB books.
I have to say that this book has not kept me on my toes as the other books had. I can usually finish her books in one sitting but I finished this one in three days, not because I wanted to prolong the pleasure of the listening to another TB book but because it did not hold my interest enough. A bit boring and long-winded descriptions of the scenery, her thoughts and feelings, her grumpiness did not help.
The forensics, which is a 'trademark' of this series, seems to have taken a back seat in this book. Everything seemed ‘superficial'; not much substance. It felt like a neither here nor there story and the forensics were only there as an excuse for another book rather than because there is a forensics story to be told.
Disappointed.

disappointed

Normally, KR books have me on the edge of my seat with the storyline, also equally engrossed and saddened during the mortuary scenes. It pains me to say that, unfortunately, this one had me bored and just waiting for it to be over virtually no "bones" to be examined, and a poor storyline rushed in places and overly long and descriptive in others.
