Summary

“I began this morning an heir. Now, I am nothing but a slave.”

Generations ago, our country was saved by the Royals. These god-like beings feed on the blood of the commoners to survive; In exchange for our blood, the Royals provide safety and stability for our people.

As the daughter of a Minister, Violet should have been the last person to end up enslaved to the insatiable thirst of the Royals. She must surrender her blood day and night to the elite until her nineteenth birthday, or die at the hands of the monsters who roam the streets after dark.

When Violet is chosen to serve as Crown Prince’s personal Bloodletter, she soon finds herself in the arms of his brother. As their love grows, so does the risk. Will Violet remain in her gilded prison forever, or will the Prince free her from the bounds of mortality? Can she too become a Royal?

Fans of Everless by Sara Holland and Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard will love this new twist on the dystopian vampire tale. The Bloodletters is an upper YA dark romantic fantasy that contains violence and suggestive themes. First book of a Planned Trilogy.

Looking forward to the next instalment

The story follows Violet, the privileged daughter of a minister, who is sold by her father just days after her mother’s death.

The Royals are the elite ruling class, they are blessed with long life and strength, but they feed on the blood of the commoners. Violet is taken to a blood house, where she must remain until her 19th birthday providing blood for her clients. The first two thirds of the book tells Violet’s story and how she navigates and survives her new life.

Everything changes again for Violet when she is chosen to become the personal bloodletter for the crown prince, once again taken away from her home and friends. While the crown prince couldn’t be less interested in her, she begins a forbidden relationship with his younger brother. The book continues with Violet navigating this new relationship with its obvious imbalance of power and which is a genuine risk to her life should the pair be discovered.

I enjoyed this audiobook, although I was surprised how late into the book the pair meet, there is a lot of story before that point. The main character goes on quite a journey from the entitled heiress to a life of servitude and doesn’t always make the best choices along the way. She is flawed and not always likeable but you find yourself rooting for her and her relationship.

I am looking forward to the next instalment as I am keen to see what the future holds for Violet.

Fun read and listen

The plot to Threat is intense and kept me on the edge of my seat. While this is a reverse harem tale and there is a romantic element to this story, there is also suspense and once again there were things that I couldn't have guessed. The surprises/ shocks kept coming. Great characters, great plot and brilliant narration, I loved every minute. The narrator of the audio book does a great job of capturing the character and silliness of the protagonist, and keeps the book moving along nicely.

Pleasantly Surprised - Will Continue This Series

Spoiler Alert!!!! Do not continue reading if you haven't read this book yet.

I received this book from the author on Story Origin in exchange for an honest review.

I have to admit I got the book because of the cover. It looked interesting... I honestly didn't even read the summary. Probably a good thing because I might have overlooked it and passed it by. I should have realized that a book called "The Bloodletters" would have been about vampires, but I definitely get that impression the first time I saw the title.

That being said, I actually enjoyed the book. It's a new and different concept. In this world, there are the Royals and the Commoners. The Royals are the group of people who live off the blood of the Commoners. They Royals saved the Commoners and allowed the human race to thrive, but in exchange, they required blood to stay young and healthy. Within the Commoners, there is a group of individuals known as the Bloodletters. These individuals willingly, or in some cases as a result of dire circumstances, allow the Royals to have limited access to their blood. There are rules that must be followed to ensure everyone's safety - the Royals do not want to get sick due to poor hygiene among the Bloodletters.

Violet is a Commoner, but a wealthy, upper-class Commoner. She grew up in a world where she was heir to become a Minister until the day after her mother's death. Her father sold her into the life of a Bloodletter. In her new home, Violet learns how to survive her new life and eventually gets obtained by the Crowned Prince of the Royals. It's here Violet falls in love and realizes that she wants more out of life than just being a Bloodletter... she wants to become a Royal, no matter the cost.

Samantha Bell weaves a wonderful web of deceit, love, and fantasy in her book "The Bloodletters". It ends with a cliffhanger, and I for one, am actually interested in reading more. I can honestly say it's been a long time since I found a vampire series that I have actually been interested in reading more than one book.

Not your usual vampire story

I loved this one! Great characters, world building, interesting story. Not traditional vampire. Loved it! The narration was great! I love that it's a standalone also. Series are great but sometimes I need a quick, excellent single book!

"Vampires" like no other

Vampires like you'll never read again, and neither will I... Our 17-year-old female protagonist is rich, spoiled and whiny until her father sells her to be a "Bloodletter" (feeding "Royals" blood by the shot glass using needle and tube). Although 17 and turning 18 during the story, she acts, speaks and thinks like she's 14. Then suddenly goes psycho murderer, and so on and on. This will be better enjoyed by the YA audience. I rec'd this audiobook for free and am reviewing of my own free will.

YA Dark Romance Fantasy

The Bloodletters by Samantha Bell is an upper YA dark romantic fantasy that I listened to on audio narrated by Hetty Elliott.

This is the first book of Samantha’s that I have read and it definitely won’t be my last. I absolutely loved this twist on dystopian vampires. I cannot wait for the second book in the trilogy The Blood Crown to be released.

Hetty did an amazing job on the narration! She really knows how to bring a story to life.
