Rebus Lives!

I love the books featuring John Rebus and have read them all, so listening to new (to me) though short, stories was an absolute joy. The narrator was wonderfully nuanced with his voice characterisations, and got the emotional tones just right.

Rebus the puzzle.

we have become familiar with John Rebus personified bt Ken Stott. try to read these without imagining the crumpled face and stocky body of the actor. Impossible. Great short stories great location.

Good fun and very enjoyable

I like the Rebus novels but hey can be a bit hard going at times. These short tales are just right. Rebus never takes himself too seriously and the plot lines are just complex enough to engage without being overly complicated. Definitely recommended for Rebus fans. the author's piece about the development of the character is also very interesting.

Brilliant!

I'm sure that I've read most of these short stories already but having the collection altogether is excellent. The narration is great and the order means that you progress through Rebus's life step by step. Highly recommended.

Treasure chest of detective stories

Where does The Beat Goes On rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

In the top 20.

What did you like best about this story?

Whole range of stories, but most interesting was the explanation at the end how the character of John Rebus was developed as well as how his surname was derived.

Have you listened to any of Ian Rankin and James Macpherson ’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Very good range of accents, characters and demeanours. Rebus is very dry and the sometimes world weariness was well conveyed with a sprightly exercise of wit, cunning or reasoning as contrast.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The persistence and determination Rebus showed in identifying and then getting justice for the skeleton under the floor.

Any additional comments?

Whole range of short stories. Some feature character more, others intrigue with plot and yet others it's the motive for the crime that is the main feature. An essential addition to any true Ian Rankin/John Rebus fan.

Super collection

I am really enjoying these short stories. Usually I prefer a longer tale that I can 'get into', but these stories are well rounded, I don't feel that I am being short changed, yet they are just a little lighter because of their length, and so, on occasions when I am not in the mood for a long and involved story these fit the bill exactly. A good range of stories, with different moods. I love them.
