Summary

This funny opposites-attract lesbian romance digs up the awkward truth about what really matters in life.

Ambitious ice queen and corporate lawyer Felicity Simmons has spent her life focused on one thing: scuttling up the career ladder. She's achingly close to taking charge of a media empire for her boss when she's sent to investigate a South Bronx charity that helps homeless people's pets. Has the charity made off with her boss's generous donation? And, who on earth is that gorgeous soft-butch veterinarian who looks as if she could toss a Shetland pony over one shoulder? Not that Felicity has any interest in some opinionated Amazon or her adorable fleabag of a dog.

Felicity is quite sure she will not be distracted, thank you very much. She has a minor mystery to solve, a mentor to impress, and her life's dream to fulfil. Even if a distraction might be exactly what she needs.

The Awkward Truth takes place during the last half of Lee Winter's The Brutal Truth but can easily be listened to as a standalone story.

Fabulously funny & utterly fantastic!

This book is absolutely phenomenal! It's such a funny and heartwarming story. I already adored Felicity in "The Brutal Truth," but I fell even more in love with her in this story. She is my favourite (fake) IceQueen I've encountered. Her character arch is incredible, possibly the biggest and most endearing archs I've read, and all I wanted to do was give her a hug (I would risk being stabbed in the neck for my girl, Fliss).

This being the 3rd book from Lee Winter, I've come to expect phenomenal descriptive imagery from her, and this book didn't disappoint. Once again, I was transported to the streets of New York City and into the life of Felicity Simmons. Lee has a gift for drawing her audience into her characters' world and making us feel what they feel and share in their experiences. One of my favourite things about this book was that it wasn't a slow burn, unlike "The Brutal Truth." It was steamy, sexy and felt exactly right for Felicity's personality. The description of Felicity and Cooper's budding romance was gorgeous and incredibly hot.

As I expected, every character felt real and well developed. Cooper and Christie were standout newbie characters for me, though. They were both so well-rounded, complex, compelling, and felt like real people. Cooper is so kind and loving, and her personality is so endearing, but I especially loved how she was described as looking like a real person. She had a belly and didn't look like the typical love interest you come across in romance novels. I also have to give a shout out to Christie. She may have only been a minor character, but she packs a punch and leaves an impression. She is so sassy and cracked me up every time she appeared. She felt so real, I actually internally wished for her to get clean and silently cheered when we found out what Felicity does for her. Although, the leading lady of this story transcends all other characters. Perhaps it's because I've already been introduced to Felicity in "The Brutal Truth" or because the story was told just from her point of view, but she felt the most real and relatable of all Lee Winter's creations. She is a boss bitch yet so misunderstood and is such a sweetheart. Just like the title suggests, she is also so wonderfully awkward it's just adorable. Her thoughts and actions throughout the story made me laugh out loud or go "awwww" multiple times. In particular, it was absolutely hilarious how she didn't connect the dots that Elena and Maddie were a couple until she saw them kissing with her own eyes. Speaking of Elena and Maddie, it was so heartwarming to get more of a glimpse of them being all domestic from an outsider's point of view and no joke, my heart did a little flip everytime Elena appeared.

Angela Dawe once again smashed the narration out of the park and amplified every character, emotion and action (steamy or otherwise) to new heights. She is utterly fantastic and one of the best narrators out there. I highly recommend this audiobook, it's brilliant and so funny. If you're looking for a hilarious, heartwarming, relatable story, full of sass, love, and some delicious sexy moments, and narrated to perfection, get this book. You won't regret it!

Wow...

The problem with audible is it prompts you to write a review immediately on finishing... I'm struggling here because my head is floating, my eyes are full of happy tears and my book hangover is in full force.

If you like simple, boring, formulaic romances, avoid this like the plague. It's none of those things. Instead, Felicity and Coop are emotional, in every way possible, passionate, full of twists and turns and have a journey full of gripping interest. There's also so many cute animals you could get a saccharine overdose by chapter two.

This is by Lee Winter so it's basically assured that it's a fantastic book and Angela guarantees a flawless narration full of so many voices you might as well be watching a play.

One of the best things is that Winters plays with us and it feels like the story is concluding about three times before it actually does.

So it's emotional, with a fantastic storyline and deep main characters... but what sets amazing writing like this aside is that the side characters will capture your heart (or make you want to vomit) almost as much as Felicity and Coop. My favourite scene is actually between two side Characters where Winters lays out the most simply perfect explanation of marriage I've ever heard.

There's no way to sum this up in one sentence but you simply cannot miss this emotional coaster of a story which will have you crying, laughing and wide eyed in love yourself over and over again.

p.s. Well done Brittney... you were my favourite really... woof woof bark.

Witty and sharp. Angela Dawe is an excellent narrator. She got the nuances of each character perfectly.
Highly recommended.

Superb- can’t wait for a third book!

Such a funny, thought provoking book. Going along for the ride as Felicity struggles with trying not to become too attached to the gorgeous vet Cooper, struggle to carry out her duties in the manner her boss expects of her and also discover the reason she was given this assignment. Once again beautifully narrated by the talented Angela Dawe.

Sublime as always

Lee’s writing is always such a joy and then you get the added anticipation over the narrating of this book because Winter x Dawe is just such a perfect match. The Brutal Truth is my favourite and this naturally has plenty of tie-ins to that story, it’s written with such affection for all those characters. Adored Felicity’s story and the twisty plot. I think I’m also always going to be in love with Elena Bartell, sigh. Lee is the Queen of melting ice queens and long may she run!

Brilliant. Ten stars.

The latest Lee Winter book:
Narrated brilliantly by Angela Dawe check
Skilfully written check
Snappy dialogue check
Frosty ice queen who melts check
Great one liners check
Sharp commentary on one of the most difficult and intransigent issues - wait, what?
Yes in what is ostensibly a romance the issue of homelessness and their pets is covered in a thought provoking and compassionate way. It is woven into the fabric of the narrative so deftly that it flows naturally. Brilliant. Ten stars.

Listened to this and thoroughly enjoyed it before listening to the first in series the "Awkward truth" both are really entertaining although Felicity is imho the most interesting character.

Listened again after the Awkward truth and the story was just as good.

Great story telling by Lee Winter and brought to life by Angela Dawe.

A series I will listen to again and again.

Funny, thought provoking and romantic

Had me howling with laughter. And also pausing for though about the roles of work and love in our lives. Lee winters goes from strength to strength and this one may be her best.
