Summary

The renowned psychoanalyst and social philosopher Erich Fromm has helped millions of men and women achieve rich, productive lives by developing their hidden capacities for love. In this astonishingly frank and candid book, he explores the ways in which this extraordinary emotion can alter the whole course of your life.

Most of us are unable to develop our capacities for love on the only level that really counts — a love that is compounded of maturity, self-knowledge, and courage. Learning to love, like other arts, demands practice and concentration. Even more than any other art, it demands genuine insight and understanding.

In this classic work, Fromm explores love in all its aspects - not only romantic love, steeped in false conceptions and lofty expectations, but also love of parents, children, brotherly love, erotic love, self-love, and the love of God.

Excellent

I read this two decades ago and it was still refreshing and needed today! Some view are outdated as that of homosexually as a sickness, but his analysis of our consumerism and capitalism still holds!
The take aways from this book are that love is possible to achieve if we train ourselves, in spite of social pressure, in meditation, consentration, reason and objectivity.
We all "know" of this need but he puts it in a way that you feel obliged and motivated to discipline yourself.
Warm recommendation!

I would not recommend this book in Earth!

Outdated, homophobic, sexist..no thanks! It's a shame but I'm afraid Eric's views are very much white middle class European male straight out of the 1950's...

Narrator dull.

Like the topic. Dislike narrator lacks flavour sounds like unseasoned undercooked chicken.
Would not recommend sorry, not sorry.

Went against my better judgment upon reading reviews so if you’re reading this do not make the same mistake.

The reader is annoying.

Even more annoying than a text-to-speech. I had a hard time listening until the end.

Tricky to follow on audiobook

Intricate text with a lot of mental thought paths explored. I felt it was very difficult to follow in audio format.

Intricate and complicated ideas and lots of them around philosophical ways of being.
