Summary

This book educates children about the crucial relationships between people and animals in the history of ancient Egypt. Told from the perspective of two children (Akila and Bastian), children learn the value of animals in Egyptian daily lives.

People in Ancient Egypt loved animals. They worked with them, played with them, learned from them, and spent much of their time around them. Even some of their gods were animals! It was not unusual for an Egyptian to return home from school and find a baboon sleeping in her bed, a goat calmly munching on her homework papyri, and the cat chasing mice and geckos around. One could say, and it would be perfectly true, that they had a special relationship with their animals. But it wouldn't be less true to say that they were terrified of some of them: the lurking crocodiles that scared the people who washed their clothes in the banks of the river Nile; and the territorial hippos, who could charge at unsuspected trespassers at 40km/h. Let’s take a look at the fascinating world of animals and men in the past.

In this book, we will join Akila and Bastian, a girl and her cat, on their journey across Ancient Egypt. They live in Nekhen, a village in Middle Egypt near the river Nile, around the year 300 BC. That is, under the Greek rule. But apart from that, they are very much like you and me. They enjoy taking walks, learning interesting stuff, and sharing adventures.
