Summary
In December 1975, the Lutz family moved into their new home on suburban Long Island. George and Kathleen Lutz knew that, one year earlier, Ronald DeFeo had murdered his parents, brothers, and sisters in the house, but the property - complete with boathouse and swimming pool - and the price were too good to pass up.
Twenty-eight days later, the entire Lutz family fled in terror.
This is the spellbinding, best-selling, true story that gripped the nation - the story of a house possessed by evil spirits, haunted by psychic phenomena almost too terrible to describe.
Jay Anson began as a copy boy on the New York Evening Journal in 1937 and later worked in advertising and publicity. With more than 500 documentary scripts for television to his credit, he was associated with Professional Films, Inc. He died in 1980.

A must listen if you enjoy slow burn horror
Big horror fan and enjoyed it quite a bit, a slow burn for sure as the odd skeptical event occurs throughout the novel and gradually ramps up as you approach the end.

Pleasantly suprised
Really was griped by the story being told. Have watched the movie with ryan reynolds in it and the book was way better. Demanding a remake of the movie according to the book.

A little repetitive
Like any story of this type it is hard to understand why characters don't behave in certain ways which seem logical to the audience. It also suffers a little from inspiring so many other works since it's publication.

Lacks oomph
Interesting to read the ‘true’ story that inspired the cinematic gore fest of 70s and 80s but it’s not a very interesting book.
The temperature drops, something slightly creepy happens but then the family go to bed or do some cleaning or put another log on the fire, and the tension evaporates - day after day after day.
While it has all the ingredients of a scary supernatural tale, it’s actually rather repetitive and mundane.
