Summary
It's the year 2277. For 50 years, Earth has received mysterious data transmissions from random locations in deep space. The streams include advanced technology, allowing humans to achieve faster-than-light travel virtually overnight. As we prepare to take our first tentative steps into interstellar space, we know almost nothing about our alien benefactors, and their motivations remain unexplained.
While completing their shakedown cruise, Captain Tom Prescott and the crew of the first Terran Fleet Command starship, TFS Ingenuity, stumble into a first contact situation. They learn that Earth is not the first civilization granted access to the stars before their time - and how this Faustian gift has inevitably led to centuries of interstellar war. Humanity's existence hangs in the balance as a powerful alliance assembles a preemptive military strike, believing it to be their only option to protect themselves...from us. Prescott and his small, initially unarmed starship must serve as our only line of defense. Ingenuity is our only hope.

What happened to the story!
If you like reading/listening to technical manuals, then this is a book for you. I am sure there is a storyline in there somewhere, but it was totally lost. The author made the technical content more important than the story.
I did try to persevere, but gave up in the end. I also found the narration grating at times.

really enjoyable
Really good listen, narrator was a little deadpan but the mix of real science and physics and a believable story made for an entertaining audio book.

If you are missing meetings full of tedious detail this is for you
I can’t blame Kafer’s deadpan narration for my boredom listening to this book. There’s hard scifi where there’s plenty of science details (which I love) and then there’s overkill where EVERY detail of meetings and corny briefings are given.
I baled.

excellent story of first contact
firslty I'm glad this is included in my audible membership.
secondly, I really like this short story of how humans were " cultivated" in to being a space faring species by other more superior aliens.
in book 2, which was also included in my membership for free, this story arc is elaborated.
I did not purchase book 3, although sci fi and first contact are my favourite topics in listening books, I could not wrap my head around why book one and two were not one book ( single book) . the author spends too much time explaining to the listener how the ship works etc. there wasn't enough story in it for me to be engaged.

Interesting ideas in this military/first contact sci fi novel
This is really a first episode rather than a stand-up alone novel. Lots of good ideas. Lots of technical description in the first half or more which will not suit many readers methinks. Interesting but not compelling. Last third of the book was much more action packed and was worth the wait - I will be compelled to read/ listen to the second instalment. In summary this isn't really a stand-alone work so don't bother unless you are prepared to read/ listen to the next one. I feel that the narrator's voice is rather monotone and lacking emotion and although I have heard much worse, I may well read more than listen to episode 2.

slow start
It was a slow start and one section is overly drawn out but after an hour it picked up but then towards the end I felt t was getting a bit far stretched

Too short
Enjoyable listen but it way too short for a credit. Need an omnibus edition with the next book.

A rollercoaster of a story, magnificent.
What did you like best about this story?
This story does not hang around, it is a fast paced roller coaster of an adventure. However, even though it has a fast pace feel to it, two chapters were dedicated to landing the ship! Your imagination just flies though, almost a perfect introduction to a series I am very much looking forward to the next book.
Have you listened to any of Jeffrey Kafer’s other performances? How does this one compare?
A good narrator, but for some reason I cannot have this in the background. You really had to listen. Is that the narrator? I am not sure. It might be the pace of the book. However I have no hesitation in getting the next one.
Any additional comments?
The only thing I did not like was the way the book ended leaving me literally aghast. "No, surely not already." I suppose when a book leaves you gagging for more you cannot really complain.
