Story
Twelve-year-old Harp Delaney is an unusual child, quiet and intelligent far beyond her years. She would rather spend her days in the library of the grand Georgian house that she sees as her home than playing on the streets with other children. Her mother, Rose, is the reserved and ladylike housekeeper at the Cliff House. The local women envy her grace and poise while the men admire her beauty. She behaves not as a servant should, but as someone who belongs at the ancestral home of eccentric loner Henry Devereaux.

Story
Manchester, 1922. Molly Watson has had enough. Engaged for the last three years to a penny-pinching pedant, she finally decides she'd rather be a surplus girl than marry a man she doesn't truly love. Aware of the need to support herself if she is to remain single all her life, she joins a secretarial class to learn new skills and a whole world opens up to her.
Summary
So much has been accomplished. Lillian Walsh has stepped out courageously beyond what she'd ever dreamed of being able to achieve. Two years ago, she was an only child, living in a big house with her adoptive parents. Now, she shares the large home with her newly rediscovered sister, Grace, and the orphaned children to whom Grace has devoted her life.
But then the letter arrives - an official complaint revoking the sisters' permission to manage their little children's home. An untimely winter trip across the prairie is necessary to defend their reputation and to repent from their well-intentioned lie. And Walter, who was once merely Lillian's childhood friend, is now her staunch support, transporting them all and standing beside them in their present trial. However, another wave is coming.
More children are being sent, escorted by an unlikely advocate, a British sailor who once ran away from home. Ebenezer Waldin's scarred heart softens to the children's plight - even to the point of breaking rules. Will there be consequences? And will there be a loving place for all of them once they arrive in the West?

Love the story but not the narrator
When you have several accents to deal with its best to get a narrator who can deal with them. Her English voices were awful, Bens Liverpool accent was ……….no words to describe it really, not sure what she thought it was.
I nearly turned it off but got involved with the people so kept listening. If the next book has this narrator I hope she has done some research into English accents or I will not be listening.

What an exciting, thrilling, and heart tugging story. It made my 3 hour drive fly by and then held my attention so much I had to listen in between my free time. It kept me coming back until the wee hours of the morning. Can't wait to purchase the next one in the series.
