About this listen

The phenomenal fifth book in the Hunger Games series!

Acclaimed actor Jefferson White, who starred in Paramount Network's Yellowstone as Jimmy Hurdstrom, brings his talent to the worldwide best-selling Hunger Games series as narrator of the Sunrise on the Reaping audiobook!

When you've been set up

to lose everything you love,

what is there left to fight for?

As the day dawns on the fiftieth annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honor of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes.

Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves.

When Haymitch's name is called, he can feel all his dreams break. He's torn from his family and his love, shuttled to the Capitol with the three other District 12 tributes: a young friend who's nearly a sister to him, a compulsive oddsmaker, and the most stuck-up girl in town. As the Games begin, Haymitch understands he's been set up to fail. But there's something in him that wants to fight . . . and have that fight reverberate far beyond the deadly arena.

Editorial Review

Cinna told me to listen to this
In 2012, my boyfriend (now husband) bought me a shirt that said Cinna told me to wear this, and I think that should tell you everything you need to know about my devotion to The Hunger Games franchise. The latest addition to the series, Sunrise on the Reaping, is something I didn’t even know I could hope for: Haymitch’s origin story. And my already high levels of anticipation for the release reached a fever-pitch when Jefferson White ( Yellowstone) was announced as the narrator, and we got to hear a sneak peek of his performance. We first met Haymitch as Katniss and Peeta’s mentor in Book 1, and since then all we could do was speculate about his own journey in the Hunger Games some 24 years before. In Sunrise on the Reaping we’ll get to meet a 16-year-old Haymitch (and perhaps the teenage versions of Katniss’s parents, Effie, and Cinna ... one can dream), and finally learn how the tenacious teen became the hardened man we all have a soft spot for. May the odds be ever in his favour. —Katie O., Audible Editor

Great casting and another one during which—oh dear—I’m crying again. Genuinely reads like a tragedy and I wanted to throw it by the end, plus now I have The Raven stuck in my head. Props to using the British word “earworm” as it should be in much more common use!

Another banger from Suzanne

Really enjoyed this, but not as much as Snow’s story. Probably the most viscous of the games. Snow has never been more vindictive. It was great to re-visit the games, but a couple of things felt a bit wonky to me. The tech seemed largely the same as Katniss’s games, though it was years earlier. Some of the previously known characters seemed like they had been shoe-horned in. A story about a false identity also seems a bit improbable. Otherwise it was very good. The voice acting was believably Haymitch.

5 stars (very rare for me) I’ve got nothing to say that won’t spoil it, so just make sure you have tissues and a emotional support pillow.

Prepare to cry…. A lot!

Absolutely amazing addition to the Hunger Games Franchise.
I have always had a major soft spot for Haymitch and to see he actually had such a heroic backstory is both heartening and of course sad, as we all know how his future goes.

The narrator was excellent and gave the character such depth. I didn’t want this to end.

Amazing Addition to Hunger Games Franchise

great addition to the hunger games series and makes plenty of references to the original trilogy and Snows past. tied up alot of plot points and fleshes out characters. Ending felt somewhat rushed but overall an exciting and engaging story.

Connects the dots and gives Haymitch his origin.

How Suzanne Collins manages to create the magic again in this book, the story of Haymitch, is extraordinary. From the first few pages until the thrilling conclusion then moving epilogue the story was captivating and so brilliantly narrated. I couldn’t stop listening, No spoilers, but suffice to say if you like the Hunger Games you will absolutely want to listen to this, it weaves into the original story so expertly, some characters you know are back and you learn so much more about the characters. One of the best books I have encountered in years.

Outstanding in every way!!! A must listen.

Probably the most emotional and moving book out of the series really makes me appreciate Haymitch more and helps add to how evil snow is. 10/10

Extremely good and moving

This book is by far the most harrowing and graphic of the hunger games series. I spent so much of this book sobbing! It’s soul crushing. But that to me is testament to how beautifully written it is. To be physically sobbing over fictional characters? Only an outstanding author can bring out all different personalities and make them tangible, relatable and loved or hated. I really don’t want to give any spoilers. But I feel I truly understand Haymitch now.
This was brought together with the fabulous performance of the narrator. He truly brought them to life so eloquently.
I finished this in less than 2 days. Could not stop listening.

Harrowing and gripping!
