Summary

An astute and tender portrayal of first love, adolescent anxiety and the realities of growing up in a small town where tradition holds people tightly in its grasp.

It's the early 1990s, and in the Irish village of Crossmore, Lucy feels out of place. Despite her fierce friendships, she's always felt this way, and the conventional path of marriage and motherhood doesn't appeal to her at all. Not even with handsome and doting Martin, her closest childhood friend. Lucy begins to make sense of herself during a long hot summer, when a spark with her school friend Susannah escalates to an all-consuming infatuation, and, very quickly, to a desperate and devastating love.

Fearful of rejection from her small and conservative community, Lucy begins living a double life, hiding the most honest parts of herself in stolen moments with Susannah. But with the end of school and the opportunity to leave Crossmore looming, Lucy must choose between two places, two people and two futures, each as terrifying as the other. Neither will be easy, but only one will offer her happiness.

Gentle and slowly beautiful

Not a lot happens but the pace is good and I think most people could relate in some way to Lucy. I like books that delve into mother daughter relationships and this does a fair bit. I think I personally would struggle to physically read this, I'm not sure it's a rapid page turner but it's nice to listen to on walks or in the car.

Loved this reminded me of giovanni’s room

The depiction of the fragility of adolescent female friendship is so spot on. I really enjoyed this books exploration sexuality in the parameters of catholic religion and family shunning and the willingness to pay the ultimate price which in this book is complete isolation from one’s own family

Just beautiful

This is my first time to write a review on here. I’ve listen to many books loved some but none more than this. It’s beautifully written and narrated. I loved it from start to finish. Looking forward to more books from this author.

Teen angst in the nineties at its finest

I really enjoyed this book. The narration was soothing and the different characters were well defined with subtleties and were not overly done. The story is nice and devastating at the same time. Often you’re frustrated with the mc’s choices, but it’s great writing and storytelling that enables you to feel so! A beautiful, queer, coming of age novel. Quite heavy on internal cognisant narration is my only critique, but that’s searching for something. I would definitely recommend!

Wonderfully narrated

Fantastic book. The writing and the imagery used throughout made the story deeply believable. The 3 main characters were so thoughtfully created, you were able to connect to each of them.
Narrated beautifully, made it a very easy listen.

Beautifully written and read

A beautifully written novel, brimming with poetic writing which perfectly encapsulates the gossip filled moments of teenage life. Clever use of religious language throughout the book to portray the difficulties Lucy faces in being gay.

The narration was great. I look forward to the authors next work!
