Summary

From the best-selling author Bobby Andrews comes a thrilling new tale of a post-apocalyptic world. ISIS has unleashed a weaponized version of the deadly Ebola virus, killing 97% of the world's population. Only the immune and those who hunkered down in remote locations remain.

Through the chaos strides a giant of a man known only as Stryker. He is a former Force Recon Marine, who has lost as much as anyone, but fights to preserve his honor and creed in the face of slave traders and rogue military elements who prey on the innocent. Together with his former drill instructor, Sarge, they struggle to eliminate the remaining evil elements in society, even as the nation's infrastructure crumbles and life becomes considerably more difficult. Together, they care for three young women who survived the plague and attempt to give them lives that are as normal as possible under the circumstances.

Follow along as they travel through a world gone mad, determined to defend the weak and innocent against long odds.

"...where love goes to die"

What did you like best about this story?

It has taken me a while to write my review because, as soon as I finished listening to the book I wanted to go back to the beginning and start again. The book is carefully crafted, and mostly set against a backbround devastated by a mutated Ebola virus which destroys some 97% of the population world wide But as the title suggests, it is really about Stryker, who he is, where he comes from and how he reacts. Our introduction to him is immediate, two years after the plague struck, then by moving backwards in time we follow his earlier life as well as being privy to how and why the virus was so devastating. There is a feeling of unreality about the man and his world. Perhaps it is because I am a Brit and the vast spaces of isolation through which he moves just couldn't happen in this, our overcrowded little island, even with only 3% of the population remaining. And, of course, not many of us have access to guns ( though I suppose if the need was great enough, we'd find a way). But more than that: the man himself was exceptional. I didn't like him but still found myself forming an emotional attachment to him.

What about Kevin Pierce’s performance did you like?

Kevin Pierce's narration was perfect, his voice fitting the picture of Stryker in my head. What little dialogue there is from other people is not greatly differentiated, making this more a reading than a performance, but this, too, fits with the overall feel of the book.

Any additional comments?

I loved the almost serene atmosphere which prevailed throughout, despite the often traumatic events taking place or anticipated. It is a world in shock with Stryker moving strongly through it. The ending was one of loss. As I said previously, it took me back to the beginning.
I received a complementary copy of Stryker from the narrator, via Audiobook Boom, in exchange for my unbiased review thoughts. These I have given.

Story needed work

I really liked the premise enough to request to listen to a copy from the narrator for an honest review, via AudioBook Boom.

Here are some thoughts...

I really liked Stryker as a character, but the zipping in and out in his timeline confused me, even as I was listening and driving. It might not have felt as bad if I was reading the book, but I found myself struggling a lot with the transitions.

As a writer, I think there were a lot of POV changes mid scene which didn't sit well with me. I wanted to follow Stryker and sometimes we were in the girls heads, and then one to the other.... it also was jarring for me to listen to, when I wanted more detail from one character I just seemed to get it from another. As for the order of the story, I think I'd actually have much preferred it to start with Stryker and his wife and child, because the whole flashback in the middle just didn't sit well for me. It was too much detail about him when I wanted to know what was going on in the real world.

Like the girls in the dorm for near on 2 years? really. I find that so so hard to believe. I wanted to, but too much just didn't quite make sense to me, as a wide read reader, and a writer.

There was in my opinion also a lot of just telling me the facts. I'm a script writer, and I know what telling is. And it read pretty much like a script. I wanted the details, the hurt the anguish to see what really was happening to these amazing characters, it just didn't happen. The book on a whole, could have been twice the length, from the solid perspectives of the main characters, Stryker, Sarge, and his grand daughter as she experienced the kidnapping and the sub rescue. There was much more that I wanted here, especially because they develop feeling for each other. For me at the moment it pretty much feels so false, and I can't get behind them as a couple. Despite all the talk and hand holding...

Kevin was a wonderful narrator. This is the first book I've listened to from him, and I would defo follow him again to something else. I thought his performance was fantastic. He had the right tone for a military man and even sometimes for the ladies. I really think the writing let him down. And the author should really pick up the pace for the next in the series, because the ending here wasn't really an ending... it just stopped.

Many thanks to ABB for the access to these new listens. I would never see or feel like I could review as I am doing. And thanks to the writer and narrator. It's hard work, it always is. But worth it.

Keep listening to your readers.. there's some great work in here. Just perhaps needs a little more time on it. With beta readers and people you can trust.

I hope this is book one of many

If you could sum up Stryker in three words, what would they be?

Riveting, entertaining, suspenseful

Who was your favorite character and why?

All of them and I don't give away plots in reviews so you have to trust me on this

Which character – as performed by Kevin Pierce – was your favorite?

Kevin is a great narrator, I've listened to him on other books and enjoy his performances immensely

Any additional comments?

New and different twist on everything gone bad and only getting worse. Well written and performed, only regret? I wish it was longer......

Solid post-apocalyptic boiler-plate.

Any additional comments?

I received a free copy of this audio book in exchange for an honest review courtesy of audio book blast.

Hard-charging ex-military hero? Check. Crusty old ex-military mentor figure? Check. Bad guys invading the homeland? Check. Team of damsels in distress turned unlikely heroines? Check. If you're looking for a solid, by-the-numbers post-apocalyptic story, this one's it. The narration was good, and the writing and characterization were decent. If I have any complaint it's that the cliffhanger ending could have been built up a bit more by showing a couple more cut scenes of the baddies preparing. As it was, the ending was a bit abrupt. Still, I enjoyed the story and I'm intrigued to see where it goes.

Excellent narration, book was lacking

Would you try another book from Bobby Andrews and/or Kevin Pierce?

Definitely Kevin Pierce, he has proven to be an excellent and consistent narrator.

Bobby Andrews? Not too sure. I have never read anything by Andrews before and, although the book held some promise and portions of it were interesting, it was lacking in substance. If this is the first book in a series, which I suspect it is based on the ending, I might read/listen to book 2 to see if it gets better.

What could Bobby Andrews have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

It needed a lot more development. Characters were shallow and relationships between them had little to no chemistry. That alone is hard enough to handle but probably the worst part for me was how little motivation or emotion surrounded every interaction or event in the book. I don't know how to describe it other than a sense that the author had no real direction or intention in the plot until he got there. The primary protagonist is a typical former-military, post apocalyptic stoic and the rest of the book was written...well...just like him.

It was like a great first draft or flushing out of a story without any real meat on the bones; this same, exact story line could have been twice the length with identical milestones but with much more content. I suspect that, based on the fact that Andrews is obviously an otherwise talented novelist, these "fixes" would have made this book a 4 or 5 star listen for me.

Was Stryker worth the listening time?

This audiobook was given by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review. I may not have otherwise listened to it because I tend to look for longer books when spending my hard-earned, Audible credits. However, due to this and since it was a pretty short book that did have some redeeming qualities, I enjoyed it enough to not regret the 5 hours spent.

fantastic book

first off amazing story intensely interesting. As always Kevin pierce is perfect his narration really sells the story. I enjoy all the books he narrates I wish he could do the narrative of all the books on audible. I really looking forward to the follow up book to stryker hope I don't wait long. I think this story would make a great movie. If you like post apocalyptic stories you won't be disappointed with this one.

I really enjoyed this book, can't wait for the next...

This book keeps you dialed in from the opening paragraph and leaves you angry and wanting more in the last. I hate cliffhangers, but without them, how else do you keep your reader/listener wanting more?

Good potential inconsistencies and abrupt end

PROS: Kevin Pierce does a great job with narration. The story has good potential. Great detail and character building.

CONS: I felt the inconsistencies in the story to be very frustrating. The flow of the story was difficult to follow at times. The story simply ends.

DETAILS: As always Kevin Pierce (KP) does a great job with narration. It seems like KP has narration for the majority of the post-apocalyptic audiobooks I have listened to. Surprisingly, he has a way of narrating that you can listen to one book or series after the another and not having to take a minute to recall which story you’re listening to.

I really liked how the author provided enough details to draw a picture, but doesn’t keep going like many authors do. I think at times; these details detract from the story as the later details don’t always lineup with the previous. The story switches between current time to a previous time, much in the way that Tom Abrahams’ “Traveler Series” does. The author does a pretty good job at accomplishing this, but at times, the questioning of “What does this have to do with the story?” does come to mind.

I’m sure the author intended for the book to end with anticipation of the next book. While there was some buildup and anticipation, I felt the book simply ended abruptly.

Fun Book

Really enjoyed this book. Bought the follow up books and had to return them. Kevin Pierce was great, the guy doing the sequels was not. Couldn't even make it thru the 1st chapter of the 2nd book

Great Listen! Hard to put down!

Really enjoyed the storyline and character development. Couldn't wait to get to the following books in the series BUT after reading reviews about how bad the new narrator was (Kevin Pierce is by far my favorite narrator in any series of books), I decided I would take a listen myself to see what the bad reviews were about. Holy crap! Those reviews were dead on. There is NO WAY I would be able to listen to an entire book, let alone an entire series with that guy narrating. I listened to 10 seconds of the sample and I had to turn it off. It really is too bad the narrator was changed. I'm sure it would have been a great series to complete.
