Summary

A month has passed since a deadly virus swept the country, killing millions and leaving chaos in its wake. Dale Hardy has managed to weather the storm by hunkering down on his homestead in Arizona. He grows his own crops, generates his own power, and draws fresh water from his own deep aquifer. But when a nearby town's water supply dwindles in the searing Arizona heat, Dale's peaceful existence is threatened.

The new mayor and sheriff want what he has, and they're willing to do whatever it takes to get it. With a crooked local government conspiring against him, Dale will need to stand in defiance or risk losing everything.

Cliffhanger Alert!!

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes...and no. The story was great, the narrator was excellent. But.......well.....let me explain. At this point I'm finished the second in the 'series'. I was listening along, not wanting to turn it off, the tension was at it's peak and wham!: the book comes to an end. Damn! Sucked into a cliffhanger! So what do I do? Buy the next book of course. It's too late, I've already been sucked in.. And to top it off the next book is only 5 hours as well. So, I get into this book. The story follows some twists and turns and now I should be asleep, but I can't because I'm hooked. The tension peaks again and what do I hear? "Audible hopes you enjoyed....." So now the ugly realizations hit. Audible does not have the next book, and I'm left hanging. On top of this is the realization that this really all should have been 1 book and I've been hooked into an expensive way to listen to it! So, if this doesn't bother you go for it. I'm glad I got the first book on sale. That helps ease the sting a bit.

Great book!

What an unexpected treat! I wasn't expecting to like this book so much. (It was given to me for free in exchange for an honest review) If the second book was out on audio, I would immediately purchase it! Having said that, I should point out that the book does end at a cliffhanger. I know some people don't like that and I thought I should warn you. We're kinda mid battle and the book ends.
The narrator did a fantastic job! I've listened to him before, but can't recall which book. He has one of those voices that you don't forget.

There is nowhere like home

Defiance is a story about defending the homefront. Making sure that what’s yours stays yours and no one can take it from you as long as you are still alive. Unfortunately, a new local government is in charge and they are as corrupt as they come.

Kevin Pierce provides the narration for Defiance and, as always does a perfect job. As I’ve said time and time again in my reviews of his, he has the perfect “prepper” voice that allows these post-apocalyptic/prepper tales to perfectly fly off of his tongue.

William H. Weber tells a different story. There isn’t much back-story here and there honestly isn’t much need for it. All the reader understands is that Dale Hardy is a stubborn survivor and he wants to continue that way. He was a pretty one-dimensional character and I believe that he was written that way. Honestly, there is nothing wrong with it because Weber wrote the other characters around him to be much more multi-dimensional and able to help Hardy in any way possible.

The story was a little different than some of the post-apocalyptic/prepper books I’ve read in that it wasn’t really about the disease. There was barely any mention of it at all (except for it killing some people close to the main characters, and that if you survive what happens to your eyes). The story was about Dale and his homestead. And for a story about that, it was pretty darn enjoyable.

The action was there, and it was perfectly pirouetted with stories about what else was going on (both the side that was against him and the others around him).

Overall, Defiance was an enjoyable story, but when the story just started getting good — it came to a quick and sudden halt. I understand wanting to write a series, but this really had a full stop before it was “finished”.

I received a copy of this book at no charge in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion.

Some quirks but still enjoyable

Which character – as performed by Kevin Pierce – was your favorite?

There is no character "performance" with Kevin Pierce, this is part of what makes him so enjoyable to listen to. He has a knack for slight fluctuations in voice between characters so I never feel lost but there is no annoying cartoon voice sounding characterizations.

Any additional comments?

This was a decent story about post EOTWAWKI survival where the protagonist didn't have to be either a hardcore prepper or a total idiot but rather a person that would seem normal to me in many rural, homesteading settings. Very little time is spent on the actual "event", we jump right in with action a short time after the SHTF.

Defiance was my first book by William H. Weber so I had zero expectations going in. I thought the story was entertaining and his writing was decent enough to keep me engaged for the full 5+ hours. It certainly doesn't hurt that Kevin Pierce was narrating of course but even Kevin can't save a bad book, however this book didn't need saving.

As my review title suggests, there were some annoyances. The overall premise of the story was on the edge of reasonable to me but not so far that I couldn't suspend disbelief. However, some of the events were just too far toward the "non-perceivable"; I don't want to add spoilers so will not give specifics. Also, there were some of the typical editing mistakes I've come to expect in these short, post-apocalyptic novels: some awkward repeating phrases or words in sentences, a couple of odd chapter breaks, etc. None of these were bad enough to detract from the story though.

I also wish there was more detail on their day to day lives, sometimes I felt that detail was lacking and I often felt like there was no sense of time throughout the novel. Sometimes it read as though everything was happening over a day even though it wasn't possible that it was only a day, just that there was no time-transition.

At any rate, it was a solid 3-star story for me read by a 5-star narrator. I'll likely try out other books by the same author.

This is exactly what I want out of this genre.

Where does Defiance rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Top drawer! Brilliant story, superb narration. I will be looking for more by Mr. Weber

What about Kevin Pierce’s performance did you like?

He is THE voice of post-apocalyptic prepper fiction.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I'm sure I will listen to it again in one sitting.

Water Wars - Its a dry day in the desert

If you could sum up Defiance in three words, what would they be?

Life will change

Who was your favorite character and why?

Dale Hardy was my favorite character. He tries so hard to make everything work and to make the world fit inside his plans and it never works the way he plans it. He takes in his family after the flu and strives to be helpful but he ends up bulling his way through getting stuck by his own actions. His softer side shows up when you least expect it softening what you thought was a rough character.

What does Kevin Pierce bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Kevin just brings out the depth of the story with any book he narrates. The Post Apocalyptic genre is hard to read with all the embedded technical terminology. He breezes through it all leaving you with clear understanding of what he was describing.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

My favorite part was in the Sheriff's office when Dale went to rescue Sandy and "convinced" Deputy Keith Harris to do as he asked.

Surviving the Plague

This book is another excellently read Kevin Pierce narration about a guy trying to survive a plague in a town full of questionable characters. The plot is excellent and does not bounce around too much, but does give a good view of what the other characters are thinking.

My only issue is that the book just seems to end rather quickly at a weird spot. While I'm sure there will be another book, a better ending would have been nice. Overall, though this book is well worth the listen.

Can't wait for the next one!

You know how some shows are so good that it kind of pisses you off when they end the season with a big cliff hanger??? Well this book is just like that!
I am really in to SHTF books, post apocalyptic or zombie books. Weber does an excellent job creating worlds where everything is going to crap. These characters are like able & intelligently written.
I've read &/or listened to a few books by W.H. Weber & they are always excellent. This one I listened to. I may have read it except that Kevin Pierce narrated it & he is by far my favorite narrator. I love his voice and his style of reading. He could/should teach a class on narrating for audio books!
I want to know more about Sandy. Duke is one of the best characters and that leads me to believe that Weber is a dog lover. Also having a WWII vet in the story added a little extra to it. I will definitely recommend this book & I will be getting the next one! Hopefully Kevin will narrate it as well.
