When his brother catches measles, Tom is sent away for the summer to stay with his uncle and aunt and is thoroughly fed up about it. What a boring summer it's going to be. But then, lying in bed one night, he hears the old grandfather clock in the hall strike the very strange hour of 13 o'clock. What can it mean? As Tom creeps downstairs and opens the door, he finds out...a magical garden, a new playmate, and the adventure of a lifetime.

Story
Now as famous on radio and audio as they are in print, the adventures of that irrepressible and ageless schoolboy William Brown have been delighting both young and old for decades. Perpetually scruffy, mud-stained, and mischievous, he is a lovable scamp whose pranks usually end in disaster, for his harassed elders at least. With friends Ginger, Douglas, and Henry (The Outlaws), and the angelic, lisping, thorn-in-his-side Violet Elizabeth Bott, William has rightly joined the literary, and radio, immortals. This volume of Just William features the following stories: William Goes To The Pictures, William The Intruder, William Below Stairs, The Fall Of The Idol, The Show, A Question Of Grammar, William Joins The Band Of Hope, The Outlaws, William And White Satin, William’s New Year’s Day, The Best Laid Plans, Jumble.

Deep in the Australian bush live some very strange creatures. Bottersnikes make their homes in rubbish heaps. They have green wrinkly skin, cheese-grater noses and pointed ears that go red when they're angry - which is most of the time. Gumbles are happy little creatures who can be squashed into any shape without being hurt. They're clever and resourceful except when they go giggly.

Excellent listening!
First published in 1963, this a charming tale of a unique friendship. Although Barney and Stig have very different lives and speak different languages, they still learn a lot from one another. This is a timeless message for everyone. Whilst attitudes and lifestyle may have changed in some ways since the book was first published, the attitudes of children towards adventures can still be appreciated. This book is firmly set in a believeable context but also contains elements of fantasy (for example Stig himself). It is the way these fit together so well that provides much of the charm. Quite simply Barney is in need of a friend and finds his friend Stig in perhaps the most unlikely place. His families' relative lack of curiosity about Stig allows for many of the advetures Stig and Barney undertake together. Barney believes in Stig and really that is all that matters. I would recommend this book to every reader of all ages. First having been read it when I was very young and now discovering with my son again in audio format.

Brilliant book read brilliantly
I had this actual recording of this book on a cassettes that I borrowed from the local library in the late 80s. I copied the tapes and returned them! When I first listened and heard the voice again last week an uncontrollable smile appeared. Amazing, timeless story, read clearly, engagingly and with feeling. Thank you audible for not re-recording something that did not need to be re-recorded and for unearthing (and presumably remastering) this version. Brilliant.

Great book!
I enjoyed listening to this story during a long car journey. I liked the mix of the real with elements of the magical. The characters are engaging and the narrative kept my interest. It made me laugh at times; it's very good humoured and told from Barney's point of view with his childlike 8 year old's innocence. This is a book that will appeal to young and old alike.

outdated
It's a long time since I read this book. I remembered it with great fondness but unfortunately I hadn't remembered a lot of the details of the story.
The chapter about fox hunting is very outdated as is the style of the story telling. It's still a wonderful concept of a caveman living in a rubbish dump but I wish I'd stuck with my distant memories of the book.
