Summary

Take a ringside seat in the high-stakes world of international politics....

After a tumultuous period in American politics, a new administration has just been sworn in. Secretary of State Ellen Adams is determined to do her duty for her country. But she is about to face a horrifying international threat....

A young foreign service officer has received a baffling text from an anonymous source. Too late, she realises it was a hastily coded warning. Then a series of bus bombs devastate Europe, heralding the rise of a new rogue terrorist organisation who will stop at nothing in their efforts to develop their own nuclear arsenal.

As Ellen unravels the damaging effects of the former presidency on international politics, she must also contemplate the unthinkable: that the last president of the United States was more than just an ineffectual leader. Was he also a traitor to his country?

From the number one best-selling authors Hillary Clinton and Louise Penny comes a novel of unsurpassed thrills and incomparable insider expertise.

"Smart and fast and twisty, State of Terror is a dazzlingly unpredictable political thriller. I loved it." (Kathy Reichs)

Excellent.

A gripping political thriller, very well written and narrated. Mrs Clinton, despite my reticence, is a very good writer. Highly recommend.

Disappointed

I came into this book very open minded. It was getting a lot of publicity and it sounded interesting. I've always admired Hillary Clinton for her forbearance against the patriarchy. Honestly, I really did not like this book at all. Way too female centric. Too much of a Hillary Clinton ego-trip wish-list of people, events and outcomes. Thinly disguised real characters of Trump, Putin and Boris, but with different names, and the main females getting the better of each of them. No, not for me. If Barbara Cartland did political thrillers, this may be how it might look... I am not American, nor have I any agenda regarding the Clintons, but I do not feel this book matches the hype surrounding it. Disappointed. The reader was good.

Boring and unsophisticated. Narration poor too.

Hooked by the Hillary thing I guess I tried Penny for the first time. The story didn't have any of the tension it should have. Unsophisticated; take a fight scene where an attacker falls off a cliff but handily his phone and car keys 'fell out of his pocket' first so our guy wasn't stranded! Hilarious. I got a bit jumbled with the characters names and roles, and realised it's for the worst possible reason when reading a book, it's because I didn't care. They were not interesting enough, or described well enough to differentiate one from the other - which is kind of important when there's a mole - I could never remember who was who. Final straw is the narrator, who madly over enunciates everything like she is teaching small children English as a second language - very distracting. I'm near the end and will probably let it dribble on to its conclusion, but its not a page turner. Oh, I forgot, every paragraph practically opens with 'after the chaos of the last administration ' again they feel the need to beat me about the head with that theme, showing no subtly and trust in the overall mood, an editor should have removed 80% of those and we'd still be overcooking it. We get it.

An exciting non-stop experience

This shows the strength of two life-long women friends who deal with a worldwide crisis at the highest level. No spoilers, but be prepared to give up several hours to indulge in listening to this non-stop riveting narrative. Don’t be surprised if you are a devotee of Louise Penney’s novels that you will find familiar strands near the heart -stopping conclusion.

Amazing. Not what I expected at all.

I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this. I love Louise Pennys novels and I didn’t know what to expect with this. It was gripping, thrilling, funny and insightful. It goes without saying that it felt so much more than another book/TV series set in the Whitehouse because of the authenticity that Hilary Clinton brings with her. I loved the links with 3 pines which were the icing on the cake for me. I can’t recommend it enough. I’m really hoping that this is the first of a series. The narrator was excellent and really brought the characters to life in an understated way. What a great read.

Fast moving political thriller telling the story of a nuclear bomb threat to America. Interesting characters, gripping storylines and top narration. Thoroughly recommended.

Exciting and scarily believable

A plot with lots of twists and turns, keeps you on the edge of your seat. Really liked the detail and the links towards the end with the Inspector Gamache series.

A good listen

I read this book first and wondered how it would work as an audible production.
I thought it worked really well and held my attention throughout.

Cheap plot - caution spoiler

The last thing you want to read, or listen in this case, for a thriller involving the US President is when everybody surrounding him is a bad guy conspiring against him. I’m struggling to finish the book because of this bad taste that I have to swallow. Next time, try a more convincing plot.

Dreadful, caricatures, grudges

Returned this. My curiosity about the plot was not sufficient to put up with the terrible writing and utterly implausible characterisations. Narrator did her best but must have been cringing throughout.

Rushed ending

Starts with some solid setting up of the chess board but then degenerates into a rushed endong. Some super cringey flag waving to boot.

Best fiction in a long long time!!!!!

The entire book is very close to a possible reality even if it is a fiction. It is just great. I advise anyone to read r listen to it.
