Summary
The twenty-eighth book in the number one bestselling Alan Banks crime series—by the master of the police procedural.
Late November, 1980. Student Nick Hartley returns from a lecture to find his house full of police officers. As he discovers that his ex-girlfriend has been found murdered in a nearby park, and her new boyfriend is missing, he realises two things in quick succession: he is undoubtedly a suspect as he has no convincing alibi, and he has own suspicions as to what might have happened...
Late November 2019. A dig near Scotch Corner unearths a skeleton that turns out to be far more recent than the Roman remains the archaeologist is looking for. Detective Superintendent Alan Banks and his team are called in and, as an investigation into the find begins, the past and the present meet with devastating consequences.
Critic reviews
"The master of the police procedural." (Mail on Sunday)
"The Alan Banks mystery-suspense novels are the best series on the market. Try one and tell me I'm wrong." (Stephen King)

Unusual twists and turns
I liked the dual time line. Going back and forth added an element of delightful complexity

Longwinded
I quite enjoyed the story but the book could have been half as long. Staggered that Milly Dowler was named as Milly DOWLING . How did that escape the proofreader ?

I loved it
Thanks Peter for another absorbing book, loved the parallel stories that came together at the end. My son is very involved in researching the undercover police who infiltrated various groups, including his own. So a meaningful and topical storyline for me. I like your characterisation of the various detectives too. I feel that I’m I’m Yorkshire too sometimes along with Banks and his team.

The Performance by Simon Slater
I so enjoyed the way Simon Slater performed. I will certainly listen to more read by him. I enjoyed the story, a bit slow to begin with!

A good and contemporary story
It’s a good and contemporary story, it is what you’d expect from Peter Robinson, thorough, details from past and present. This book gives you even two stories, and it sets it apart this way, you can follow both till the time they meet in the end. It is interesting, but no hint of humour in this book, it’s melancholic and sad. It is still a very good listen, wonderfully narrated, just not your jolly Christmas special;).

DCI BANKS
Awesome series, just re-listened to all 28 books. Was hoping to get a conclusion to DCI Banks love life, hoped he’d end up with Annie. Maybe Peter Robinson left such a conclusion with someone, and we get to hear it at some point. Hard to think of who to read next, Peter leaves a vast gap in the mystery series from now on.
R.I.P. Peter and thank you for your wonderful legacy.

Farewell to Banks
I have always admired Peter Robinson’s writing and was sorry to learn of his death and to know that there will be no more DCI Banks. I was thoroughly absorbed in this last tale and sad to finish it and the series.
