Good story

Good story, following the career of Richard Bolitho. Very good narration. I look forward to the next Bolitho story.

Stand into danger

As with all Alexander Kent stories the detail is excellent, but never so excessive that they bog down the story. The characters are realistic and believable, combining everyday life aboard the ships with exciting actions and smaller human sub plots, that bring the 19th century navy into the reader/listener's imagination

Good

Very entertaining. A good way to get through the long, dark winter nights and the short dark winter days.

Good book. good narration.

Character is still warming up. I find Michael Jayston a good clear reader, but doesn't have the range of voices of other readers. Many of the authority figures sound the same. All a bit dark and threatening, which is a bit weird .

Another masterpiece

The excellent narration of this tale immediately draws one back through time as Richard Bolitho joins his first ship as a Third Lieutenant aboard HMS Destiny. I could feel myself joining Richard in all his adventures - feel the storms and blistering heat of the Caribbean, and shared the joys and pain he felt. A truly superb experience.

Listening to this great book again

Years ago I found these great Alexander Kent books in my local library on cassette tape, then later CD (what a pain they used to be, you had to keep a note of where you where in the track list) Jaston’s narration is superb, the authors detail so well woven in to the story, Kent stands proud as the flagship of the line off battle tall ship era. Any one book stands well on its own, but as a collection in chronological order sweep you through an interesting time in colonial history world wide. If you need to find a new old author to get lost away from the Goodish modern world... you have found him.
