Story
Abigail Westcott's dreams for her future were lost when her father died and she discovered her parents were not legally married. But now, six years later, she enjoys the independence a life without expectation provides a wealthy single woman. Indeed, she's grown confident enough to scold the careless servant chopping wood outside without his shirt on in the proximity of ladies. But the man is not a servant. He is Gilbert Bennington, the lieutenant colonel and superior officer who has escorted her wounded brother, Harry, home from the wars with Napoleon.

Story
Like all the Bedwyn men, Aidan has a reputation for cool arrogance. But this proud nobleman also possesses a loyal, passionate heart - and it is this fierce loyalty that has brought Colonel Lord Aidan to Ringwood Manor to honor a dying soldier's request. Having promised to comfort and protect the man's sister, Aidan never expected to find a headstrong, fiercely independent woman who wants no part of his protection, nor did he expect the feelings this beguiling creature would ignite in his guarded heart.

Summary
During a rare white Christmas at Brambledean Court, the widow Elizabeth, Lady Overfield, defies convention by falling in love with a younger man in the latest novel in the Westcott series.
After her husband's passing, Elizabeth Overfield decides she must enter into another suitable marriage. That, however, is the last thing on her mind when she meets Colin Handrich, Lord Hodges, at the Westcott Christmas house party. She simply enjoys his company as they listen to carolers on Christmas Eve, walk home from church together on Christmas morning, and engage in a spirited snowball fight in the afternoon.
Both are surprised when their sled topples them into a snowbank and they end up sharing an unexpected kiss. They know there is no question of any relationship between them, for she is nine years older than him.
They return to London the following Season, both committed to finding other more suitable matches. Still, they agree to share one waltz at each ball they attend. This innocuous agreement proves to be one that will topple their worlds, as each dance steadily ensnares them in a romance that forces the two to question what they are willing to sacrifice for love....

Good
I particularly liked the older women/younger man (since I am 6 yrs older than my husband). However I did have to skip ahead a lot to skip over entire passages that were simply repeating what had either just happened or was just discussed. Ms. Balogh is a good story creator but does seem to fill lots of pages with repetitive descriptions, conversations and retelling of actions that just happened. She is an excellent writer...maybe needs an excellent editor? I do recommend though.

Two who are meant to Love each Other
Loved the book. Lady Elizabeth Overfield has been a widow for several years and is thinking about remarrying. She meets
hers sister-in-laws brother Lord Colin Hodges and there are sparks. But she knows nothing can come if it since she is 9 years older than he.
She does confide to Colin the extent of her previous marriage, the abuse and losing 2 babies to that abuse. When she accepts
another mans proposal she believes she will finally have the children she wants. But the night of their engagement ball he becomes jealous and says things out of rage. She immediately says there engagement is over, she will not go through that again!
Maybe Colin will get another chance. He needs to save her reputation and gossip spreads about her. Another wonderful book by Mary Balogh!

Worth the read. Did not dissapoint. My favorite narrator and one of my favorite authors. Great story I just wish I was able to experience more from them as a married couple. They took so long to get together and then it seemed to be over. But I trust the author and will wait patiently for the next book in the series.

Phoned in
I made it to the end, but it was a struggle. It was not Mary Balogh's best by far. It seemed she had to come up with another book for this series so she quickly dashed something off. Even the wonderful narration of Rosayn Landor couldnt save this one for me.

Elizabeth’s story!
Love Lizzy, and was glad to see her story. I wish that the Dowager Lady Hodges got more of a comeuppance (like hearing herself be called old by Robbie), though. Also, in a past novel, Wren mentions hearing what her mother has planned for her at age 10, but on this book Colin doesn’t know why Wren leaves; seems like a continuity problem. For that I gave it 4 stars as opposed to 5.
Enjoying the series!

:Great characters, but very very heavy going.
I love the series and the characters. I've been a Mary Balogh fan for many years and think Roz Landor is a great narrator. But, this book could have been a short story if all the repetition has been removed. Regardless, I enjoyed the book. It'll just be a long while before I listen to another Balogh book.

Not even Ms. Landor could save this - almost DNF
Warning: This isn't a romance, but a family story about a man figuring out his life. The love plot is wholly secondary. I've never done Balogh before, but if all her work is so redundant and long-winded I never will. If you have read the other Westcott novels, you'll enjoy listening to their plots being rehashed every few pages. If you need to hear a conversation three or even four times from different POVs to understand what's going on, then you'll love this one. Ms. Landor is, as always, sublime, but this novel was NOT. It was a complete slog, and though I made it through to the end, it never got better. I'm terribly disappointed because most historical romance readers swear by Balogh.

Ummmm Where’s the beef?
A little bit boring with some good parts thrown in. I finally finished out of desperation. It could have been so much more but kept missing the mark. I normally like MB books but if I was a first time reader I would never purchase another one after reading this one.
SPOILER ALERT
Even the one love scene was boring. No closure to his relationship with his mother. No rhyme or reason for his oldest sister’s actions. I have to say over all this book was disappointing.
