Summary

In this YA contemporary queer romance from the author of Hot Dog Girl, an openly gay track star falls for a closeted, bisexual teen beauty queen with a penchant for fixing up old cars.

“Earnest, wistful, romantic, and real.” (Casey McQuiston, New York Times best-selling author of Red, White & Royal Blue)

Morgan, an elite track athlete, is forced to transfer high schools late in her senior year after it turns out being queer is against her private Catholic school's code of conduct. There, she meets Ruby, who has two hobbies: tinkering with her baby blue 1970 Ford Torino and competing in local beauty pageants, the latter to live out the dreams of her overbearing mother. The two are drawn to each other and can't deny their growing feelings. But while Morgan - out and proud, and determined to have a fresh start - doesn't want to have to keep their budding relationship a secret, Ruby isn't ready to come out yet. With each girl on a different path toward living her truth, can they go the distance together?

“Beautiful, necessary, and completely irresistible.” (Becky Albertalli, New York Times best-selling author of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda)

A captivating story

I am a huge fan or Jennifer Dugan and the tale of Ruby and Morgan is one I know I will never forget. I have read both the book and listened to the audio version and each chapter is so beautifully written I could visualise each scene and character perfectly. Their journey to becoming the people that they are by the end of the book and a roller coaster of emotions had me captivated from the start and this book made me laugh and cry at various points as well! I highly recommend giving ‘Some Girls Do’ a chance... you truly won't regret it.

I love this book.

I wish more LGBT+ books were like this. full of emotion and not sex. I read this after finishing hot dog girl which I loved but this book was even better really. I loved that the pageant queen got to be more masculine then the track star.

Some good moments

The writing was fine. Narrators were good. Ruby is actually very relatable - she reminds me of Ariel from Footloose in a lot of ways. Her character had depth and honesty. Morgan was - eyeroll - the worst. Shes SOOOO spoiled and privileged and none of it gets addressed before the end. “Oh she’s so brave for standing up to her school” She didn’t even do any of the work! Her parents deal with the lawyers, everyone bends over backwards to help her find a new school, she has instant friends in two circles, and sure she keeps pushing for the lawsuit but that’s because she just has to sit back and let everyone else carry it. And obviously her growth is at the end when she realizes how poorly she treats Ruby but it’s kind of late and she never apologizes for forcing Ruby out to basically anyone Morgan wanted to bitch and complain to. Maybe there’s a lesson in all that but I kinda wanted a Ruby to be like “peace out” and go off to college to find another hot girl who builds cars.

Terribly written ugh

This is my favorite genre so I have read 100 queer YA novels. This one is horrible. Terribly written. I spent most of the book wincing and cringing. The characters are so unrealistic and unrelatable. I kept waiting for it to get better and it just never did. So disappointed.

It’s so bad

This storyline is TIRED. The writing was so bad. The arguments between the two main characters were physically painful. I’m mad I spent a whole credit on this book.
