Summary
Beckett Gaines, a gay teen living in South Carolina, has his world turned upside-down by a jock in this laugh-out-loud novel that’s Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda meets The Parent Trap.
Beck: The Golden Girls-loving, out-and-proud choir nerd growing up in the “ass-crack of the Bible belt.”
Jax: The Golden Boy, star quarterback with a slick veneer facing uncomfortable truths about himself and his past.
When Beck’s emotionally fragile dad starts dating the recently single (and supposedly lesbian) mom of former bully, Jaxon Parker, Beck is not having it. Jax isn’t happy about the situation either, holding out hope that his moms will reunite and restore the only stable home he’s ever known. Putting aside past differences, the boys plot to derail the budding romance between their parents at their conservative hometown’s first-ever Rainbow Prom. Hearts will be broken, new romance will bloom, but nothing will go down the way Beck and Jax have planned.
In his hilarious and provocative debut, Greg Howard examines the challenges of growing up different in a small southern town through the lens of colorful and unforgettable characters who stay with you long after the last drop of sweet tea.

Excellent listen.
An excellent listen. I only really have one mild complaint, and that is that I didn't enjoy the voice of Jax very much,
It's passable, but a little wooden, if you know what I mean? Michel Crouch did a superb job as usual, narrating Beck, so I feel guilty having only being able to give the performance 4 stars. It would be 5 stars by Crouch. 3 stars by Will Damron.

This novel is frustrating
There is alot to like here. Firstly, the performances by Crouch and Damron are fantastic. The accents rarely feel forced and they're both talented readers and actors. In the novel itself, Howard has some really clever and pretty flourishes, but they're overshadowed by how much the main characters hate women and one of the big reveals that buys into the whole "the biggest homophobes are overcompensating, queer people are the architects of our own oppression" nonsense. And far be it from me to stick up for Christians but man, Howard really lays into them and they're 1D mustache twirling villains. The inclusion of incidentally Christian characters who are affirming and true scotsmen feels like even he realized he was being brutal. Altogether, I would say it's certainly a book I finished.

A wonderfully whimsical gay high school romance!
I loved this audiobook so much! It’s the first audiobook I’ve listened to without first having read the book, and I can’t imagine having done it any other way.
It works brilliantly as audio, as the two voice actors works their magic and makes the listener believe what their telling. Granted, this is also impacted by the fact that I’m a 19 year old gay kid, so I identify really well with the characters based on that, but the two voices really are amazing!
Whether it’s the chapters narrated by sass queen Becket, or the chapters by jock king Jax, the listener is sure to fall in love!
The book is not a deep drama, but a fun and light listen, and that was exactly what I wanted. Gay romance dramas, like Call Me By Your Name, are amazing in their own way, but sometimes you just wanna settle in with a cozy comfort read/listen, and this is the perfect book for that!
Cannot recommend enough!!!

Lovely story, well written
Although a beautiful story that is well written, with obvious love for the characters, I found the story line to be a little bit unbelievable at times. It was, however, also moving, funny, charming and often disarming--full of current pop culture references and humor. I took it as how the world should be, but is not, yet The narrators, however, bring these characters to life. Crouch, in particular, has an uncanny ability to inhabit the characters' skins. He speaks as they would speak, intonates as they would, and effortlessly so. He can be hypnotic at times, and make you forget that you are listening to an audio book--but rather feel like you are eavesdropping on someone's innermost thoughts or their private conversations. I just wanted more and more of him. He is a master craftsman and I will make a point of seeking out other works that he has narrated. He's amazing.

OH MY GOD
this book is by far one of my most favoritest bestest! books ever! no joke Ive read a lot of books, but this one goes beyond warming my heart, and making me hope for mr right=P...….the story was perfect from the strength of Beck who didn't just roll over and let Jack's treat him like crap, which is unfortunately a common theme in mm romance novels, I can't count how many times ive thought "your getting treated like S**t and still bend over backwards to please the love interest" Jacks had to WORK to get beck. Honestly while the story itself is by far my favorite, the narrators were PERFECT, Michael Crouch is probably my favorite narrator, id definitely recommend this book!!

erotica or YA literature? No.
Awkwardly caught between YA fiction and gay erotica, this book can be extremely uncomfortable to listen to. Generic, flat, and not deserving of comparison to Albertalli's Simon vs the Homo Sapiens, an infinitely better book. the performances are good, but over-stylized, and far, far too slow. I finally had to move it to 1.5 speed to finish it.

such a good book!
I really enjoyed this story. the characters felt real, if a little campy. the story was simple, but really funny and charming. if you enjoy other YA titles with LGBT characters, like the works by Adam Silvera or Becky Albertalli, you'll probably like this book. the narrations were both really well done, Michael Crouch was amazing (as always) and really brings the character to life, his accent sounded believable, and I can see how it could put some people off but it's pretty consistent. Will Damron was great too, at first I couldn't get into his voice (as it felt too mature and flat) but over the course of the story I came to enjoy it a lot more. all in all if you enjoy book sin this genre you'll most likely enjoy this one as much as I did!

Excellent
Excellent story, and at times laugh out loud funny. The narrator Beck’s character in particular had an understated approach with the character that was priceless. Really enjoyed this one.

Subpar Characters/Narration
The narrator on this one was very annoying and the characters were unlikable, to say the least. Beckett's bad enough, but Jaxon is downright despicable. I started it long after I bought it, so I couldn't return it, so I forced myself to listen to it.
