Blast from the Past
I requested this audio book unconditionally and I’m so pleased I did. I remembered reading a book called Slugs way back when I was a lot younger, but wasn’t sure if this was the same one. It is and it brought back many memories. I think it was one of the first horror books I bought and it’s still as good now. Perhaps even better because now it’s on audio and the narration is spot on. Simon reads at just the right pace, clearly and with correct pronunciation. He’s one of those talented narrators who manages to bring the story to life, so much so that you think you’ve actually watched it. I’ve added him to my list of narrators to look out for.

Old school gory. Language and tone, of it's time.
Proper old school gory. shortish. sex, slugs, gory descriptions of slugs eating people. very outdated language, but then again cancelling something which is outdated is a slippery slope. if you're not easily offended, then give it a go.

gripping narration
Not my usual genre, but this was a gripping listen. the characters brought to life and my attention held by the easy to listen to narration. Quite gross in places but a fun listen. Give this a go.

What a sublime delight!
I read Slugs when I was 14 & was intrigued to revisit a story I remember being gruesome & idiosyncratic. I was not disappointed! The story itself is engaging, macabre, disgusting with the perfect dash of raunch. However, Simon Aitchison’s narration took the book to a whole new level. His baritone voice just delivers. It’s the kind of voice that makes you want to settle down with a whisky in front of a fire & listen to stories. His accents, character portrayals, one liners are seamless & comically brilliant. It was just delicious, grisly, guilty pleasure. Please give him a Detective series with an evil serial killer. I will settle in for the rest of the winter :)

They don't make them like they used to..
Disclaimer: I was provided this book, free of charge, in exchange for an honest review.
I grew up reading the classic gore-books of James Herbert, Graham Masterton and of course Shaun Hutson but somehow I'd never read Slugs. I think this may be due to having seen the movie adaptation in 1988 and so not really feeling the need to read it and so I was very excited to be given the chance to do so now.
A lot of writing styles age badly, Sci-Fi can fee more light and fanciful & Fantasy can feel very childish and often misogynistic. Horror meanwhile seems the opposite, and newer books often seem to be more 'emotional' or socially aware while the classics were there to shock and disgust with acts of intense violence and gore and this is no different in Slugs.
The story is a classic one of nature-versus-man with large (not giant) flesh eating slugs that start to feed on living meat in a small England town and it's up to a small group to find their source and stop them before more deaths occur. The story is fast paces and set out nicely with a general alternation between incident and protagonist chapters that does a great job of keeping the threat level high and the sense of progression moving along at a good clip. And at just over 6 hours, the book is the perfect length and never fees like feet are being dragged or the story is needlessly bloated.
Speaking of bloated, the description of the slugs fat bloated bodies is wonderfully grotesque and, be it the beasts themselves or the manner in which the victims are dispatched, the writing is precise and the deaths cut like a knife, a blunt knife, used very slowly. So yes, the kills in the book are brutal, with no body part, gender or age ignored as these slippery little blighters will eat anything so, as with much of 80s horror, this isn't for the squeamish.
As for the experience of listening, narration of horror can easily go wrong, with the reader going over the top with delivery or morbidly dark to appear like a Crypt-Keeper. Thankfully Simon Aitchison has done something very smart with this book, which is based in a small town England and reads it in a mostly matter-of-fact manner with no loud or explosive expressions of terror and it's all read in a manner that really does unsettle as we listen to the horrific acts being carried out in an almost new-story manner. That's not to say it's pedestrian, and he does provide voices for each character making it easy to keep up with each scene and injects emotion and pain as needed so in all I was extremely satisfied and captivated by the narration.
So as a step back into the bygone era of horror novels, this was a wonderfully horrid journey, offering the sorts of thrills we don't get anymore in mainstream horror and not falling under the shlock-bus be ensuring there are characters we care about. Oh and I loved the multiple nods to one of my favourite bands Iron Maiden with mentions of their t-shirts and the name of a particular street which I assume means Shaun was a fan in his 30s and I hope he remains so now.

Fantastic story from the Godfather of Gore
It’s been a while since I read the Slugs paperback, and I’d forgotten how gripping the story was. Simon Aitchison does a fantastic job in bringing the story to life with his inimitable performance.

Extremely entertaining with fantastic narration
This was very silly but highly entertaining! I don’t think I’ll be able to ever see a slug again without shuddering. What really made this book was the narration. Simon does a fantastic job, bringing the story to life with different voices and sound effects, and it is very well paced. Really enjoyed!

Put me off gardening for a while!
This is a brilliantly written story with plenty of stomach turning gore, especially where the worms are coming out of his eyes! Yuck! Quite funny in places but edge of the seat listening from start to finish. Definitely not for bedtime so leave plenty of time to finish it as you will want to get to the end and see what happens.. Highly recommended. Simon Aitchison's narration was second to none bringing the characters and whole story to life, well worth it's 5 star rating.

His worst book and worse reading
I love shauns books and have read loads of them. This was the first one I found boring and very predictable. The guy reading it does terrible voices for the female characters which removes any sort of sexuality from them. This almost put me off audiobooks but thought I'd try another and glad I did.
