Summary
There are few people who have been in the wrestling business longer than Jim Ross. And those who have made it as long as he has (half a century to be exact) probably made enemies or burned bridges. But that's just not JR.
Slobberknocker is the story of how an Oklahoman farm kid with a vivid imagination and seemingly unattainable dreams became "The Voice of Wrestling" to record TV audiences and millions of fans around the world.
Jim opens up about his life as an only child on a working farm, who became obsessed with professional wrestling having first seen it on his grandparents' TV. Even though the wrestling business was notoriously secretive and wary of "outsiders", he somehow got a foot in the door to start a historic career, one where he held almost every job in the business - from putting up the ring to calling matches, from driving his blind, drunk boss toward revenge to consoling two naked 600-pound brothers in the shower room after a rough match.
With all those adventures and responsibilities, he's also recognized as the man who built and nurtured a once-in-a-generation talent roster that took the WWE to new heights, including "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Brock Lesnar, and The Rock, to name a few. Listeners will finally get the opportunity to hear never-before-told stories about the politics, wackiness, and personalities of all the biggest stars.
But this isn't just a wrestling story. It's a story about overcoming adversity and achieving your dreams, as success did not come without significant costs and unforeseen challenges to JR, including multiple bouts of severe facial paralysis called Bell's palsy. Currently he is the host of the podcast The Ross Report.
Any fan of wrestling- from the territory days to today - will be enthralled with stories from the road and behind the scenes. Slobberknocker is the first time Ross tells his story - and you don't want to miss it!

Slobber knocker
I really enjoyed this book.
Having it read by the author isn’t always good to hear but Jim Ross really made me want to keep listening (just like he does whenever he’s doing his announcing for any promotion).
The performance is essential to me because audio is a huge part of my life, I’m blind and most of the books haven’t been available in accessible formats until recently.
I gave this rating because JR’s performance kept my attention throughout and to me that’s what audiobooks should always do, just like the original printed books are meant to do.
I look forward to the sequel.
Jaime

A great listen that takes time to find its feet
As an avid WWF/WWE fan before and during the Attitude era - and one who has lost interest in wrestling completely since - this was a thoroughly enjoyable trip down memory lane.
You can almost hear Good Ol' JR grow in confidence as the book proceeds, so stick with it past the first 10 or so quick chapters as Ross finds his feet. When he's in full flight this book is wonderful. The anecdotes vary enormously and I thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the gritty business of the wrestling circuits of the 70s and 80s.
If you love (or just once loved) wrestling then this is a great listen.

A must listen if you're a fan of J.R
I've listened to over 30 audio books here on Audible, and this is the only one that has kept me fully focused from start to finish. J.R tells the story of his life very well and doesn't stay on one topic for longer than necessary. You can literally paint a picture of his life by listening to his words. A must listen if you're a big fan of J.R. 5 STARS.

I Didn't want it to end
This book is incredible and the fact it is told by JR is magic. This is the first audiobook I felt tempted to applaud. I had JR in my headphones for 10 amazing hours telling me not just about his life and career but also providing a window into the real behind the scenes of the wrestling world. I watched so much wrestling as a child and a teen over and over that this all came back to me and it felt like I had a friend remincisng with me but giving me anecdotes I had not yet heard. I am excited to jump straight into the next audiobook.

Essential listening
Quite simply: a must listen for any fan of professional wrestling. JR's stories range from funny, to heartwarming, to fascinating. I adored every second of this book.

Interesting memoir needing more depth
It was great to hear good ol’ JR narrate through his incredibly interesting career packed with stories of life in the business and the impact on his family life.
My only gripe is that he looks back quite broadly, over a long period of time, and I wonder if a shorter time span looked into with more detail would have made for a more engaging listen.
A great audiobook to drive to though.

A must read for any fan
Simply put by the man himself, voice of wrestling to me and probably all fans. And the story that got him to where is just magnificent.
