About this listen
On a splendid August afternoon, Susanna Osbourne is introduced to the most handsome man she has ever seen...and instantly feels the icy chill of recognition. Peter Edgeworth, Viscount Whitleaf, is utterly charming - and seemingly unaware that they have met before. With his knowing smile and seductive gaze, Peter acts the rake; but he stirs something in Susanna she has never felt before, a yearning that both frightens and dazzles her. Instantly, she knows this brash nobleman poses a threat to her heart and to the secrets she guards so desperately.
From the moment they meet, Peter is drawn to Susanna's independence, dazzled by her sharp wit; he simply must have her. But the more he pursues, the more Susanna withdraws - until a sensual game of thrust-and-parry culminates in a glorious afternoon of passion. Now more determined than ever to keep her by his side, Peter begins to suspect that a tragic history still haunts Susanna. And as he moves closer to the truth, Peter is certain of one thing: He will defy the mysteries of her past for a future with this exquisite creature. All Susanna must do is trust him with the most precious secret of all....

Long drawn out
Liked the Viscount Whitleaf’s character but Suzanna grew on me
It was strange how she consented to intimacy with the son of a woman who drove her dad to suicide, but kept refusing to marry him.
This is a common theme in Balogh’s books which is a bit tedious considering that at the time of these stories a woman’s virtue was worth everything to her.
I also grew very tired of the constant “final goodbyes” when they no such thing.
Hope Claudia’s story is much better though it’s incredible how all these school teachers end up with dukes, earls, or viscounts!

improvements
In books 1 & 2, Suzanne had a Scottish accent which completely disappeared in this book. Suzanne was far more likeable in the previous books.
Also, as others have mentioned, the story could have been condensed and, I my opinion, what Suzanna had experienced and seen, she should have confronted those rather than coming across as meek when she's portrayed as strong and independent.

Easy to listen to and follow.
He came into his title at a very young age, surrounded by five sisters and mother. It is not surprising he is so comfortably around women and has learnt to say all the right things. He is cosseted, protected and generally fussed over as a very valuable person all his young life.
The only males he had contact with were his Uncles, but they let him down badly. He has been drifting along in life, finally meeting his cousin gave him some sort of a normal family experience.
She ran away at the age of twelve, was a Charity pupil at a girls' school, then teacher. She has been looking after herself for a long time, has a purpose to her life.
The story is about how two such different people come to understand each other. Naturally there are some twists and turns as the story progresses. Still believable and easy to listen too, no need to fast forward, no gratuitous sex.

Charming
A bit drawn out but a delightful story. The hero is a charming wimp who comes of age. Well narrated.

My least favourite of the series so far
I found it extremely hard to warm to Susannah completely... she was in my opinion really whingey & self-pitying the whole way through.
I think the author felt the same, that's why the story is more focused on Peter's point of view ot at least it felt like that to me...
Tbh, if I was Peter, I would've left her to her devices from the get go... but hey-ho!
The narrator is an absolute delight though... Rosalyn Landor is absolutely fantastic 👏👏

Could have been told in half the time.
This was the most tedious of the series (with absolutely no redeeming qualities). I believe that this story could have been told in half the time.
Truly only worth pursuing to complete the series.

It was slow …
I found the story slow and implausible
Shame that the author drags on and on … some characters are better than others but this is it …
Sorry
