Story
On a bright sunny day in Port Silver, ex-Journalist Martin Scarsden misses a call from his girlfriend, Mandy. Checking his voicemail later, all he hears is her terrified scream before the phone cuts off. Back at the house, he finds a policeman unconscious on the floor and Mandy gone. So starts a twisting tale of intrigue and danger, as Martin probes the past of the woman he loves, a woman who has buried her former life deep. And for the first time, Mandy finds denial impossible, now that the body of a man has been discovered - a man to whom she was engaged to marry.

Story
DCI Michael Lambert thought he’d closed his last case.... Yet when he’s passed a file detailing a particularly gruesome murder, Michael knows that this is no ordinary killer at work. The removal of the victim’s eyes and the Latin inscription carved into the chest is the chilling calling card of the ‘soul jacker’: a cold-blooded murderer who struck close to Michael once before, 25 years ago. Now the long-buried case is being reopened, and Michael is determined to use his inside knowledge to finally bring the killer to justice.

A Raw, Pacey and Brilliantly Crafted Thriller
- By Christine on 04-12-11
Summary
For half a lifetime, journalist Martin Scarsden has run from his past. But now there is no escaping.
He'd vowed never to return to his hometown, Port Silver, and its traumatic memories. But now his new partner, Mandy Blonde, has inherited an old house in the seaside town, and Martin knows their chance of a new life together won't come again.
Martin arrives to find his best friend from school days brutally murdered and Mandy the chief suspect. With the police curiously reluctant to pursue other suspects, Martin goes searching for the killer. And finds the past waiting for him.
He's making little progress when a terrible new crime starts to reveal the truth. The media descend on Port Silver, attracted by a story that has it all: sex, drugs, celebrity and religion. Once again, Martin finds himself in the front line of reporting.
Yet the demands of deadlines and his desire to clear Mandy are not enough: the past is ever present.
An enthralling and propulsive thriller from the acclaimed and best-selling author of Scrublands.

Really enjoyed this, and its predecessor. Great, well-crafted stories, just loved every minute. Both books deserve a decent TV series (not a movie - wouldn't do it justice). Hope Chris Hammer does more.

Pretty laboured. struggled to finish
I enjoyed scrublands but while I did persist to the end of silver, I found it quite contrived in terms of how convoluted the plot was and the twists that just seemed to go on and on. and not in a good way. managed to finish it but it was a slog as I lost interest about 3/4 way through.

Very good but...
This was enjoyable, eventually but not as good as “Scrublands” which I listened to immediately prior to this. I wondered if the change of narrator would make a huge difference but it didn’t. These changes often spoil a series but Nicholas Osmond was wonderful. However, and this is nothing to do with the narrator and I don’t know if the writing was dramatically changed, but for a lot if this book I really didn’t like Martin nor Mandy very much. Overall though it was very good but had a great deal to live up to following the first book.

Really enjoyable
I really enjoyed the story and its twists and revelations. We learn a lot about Martin in this story and at times I found it pleasantly moving.
I am an Australian living in the UK so I love the Australian references which others might find a little puzzling, like a meat raffle.
The reading of the book is really good but I found the pronunciation of Ballina somewhat surprising.

Disappointed
I really enjoyed Scrublands but was disappointed in Silver. It starts off promisingly and I think maybe with better editoring it could be better. Too much time driving back and forth did nothing for the story other than drag it out. The bit about eating endangered fish and animals was unnecessary and might give some legitimacy to this although one sentence near the ends basiclly says the perpetrator should stop. This left me with a bad taste . Possibly the wrong people died in the story
