Summary

Marshal Teddy Daniels has come to Shutter Island, home of Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane, to find an escaped murderer named Rachel Solando.

As a killer hurricane bears down on the island, the investigation deepens, and the questions mount. How has a barefoot woman escaped from a locked room? Who is leaving them clues in the form of cryptic codes? And what really goes on in Ward C?

The closer Teddy gets to the truth, the more elusive it becomes. And the more he begins to believe that he may never leave Shutter Island. Because someone is trying to drive him insane....

Gripping and so well read

Where does Shutter Island rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

near the very top! this is one of those books that really does have it all, interesting story, very well written and impeccably read. It's set in an insane asylum which piqued my interest immediately (I find books about the mind so intriguing!) and as you would imagine...all is not as it seems. there are some fabulous twists that I certainly didn't see coming. It is terribly sad in places and can be quite unsettling, the ending is so so good!!!!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Chuck... or was it? no spoilers, you'll have to listen to find out!

Have you listened to any of Tom Stechschulte’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No I haven't but I fully intend to now.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes and no... I didn't want the book to end as it was so good but I was also desperate to get to the truth with Teddy!

Any additional comments?

JUST. GET. IT. You won't be disappointed!

Great story

I loved this audiobook, as I knew I would because I love the film and have see it very many times. This is one where the film actually stays true to the book, I'm happy to say. I listened to this all in one day because I enjoyed it so much.

Lehane at his best

One of the best books I've ever listened to. Mystery, action, thriller and a dose of psychology.

Lehane makes you feel for the characters, creates picture perfect images in your mind and keeps you hooked right to the end.

Narrator does a fine job.

Brilliant

I enjoyed the film and I've been surprised with how closely the film has matched the book. The narration was perfect!

mixed bag

An intriguing story to begin with as the story unfold. A disappointing ending. Felt cheated by it.

Beautifully written and great performance. I listened to this in 2 sittings (not sitting really, tidying!) I loved every minute of it! Thoroughly recommend! The setting, characters, twist all bloody brilliant, captivating, so emotional!

Loved everything about this Audiobook

Although some of the subject matter was somewhat unpleasant at times I enjoyed every bit of this book - excellent narration and a wonderful, engrossing story (even if it was a tiny bit far-fetched in places) ...

Tedious in the extreme

I made it through half of this and gave up. The first 2 chapters were VERY slow going, but once they were out of the way, it picked up. A little.

I kept zoning out, then I'd realise I'd missed what was going on (or who was talking) and then have to go back a few minutes. I made it to approximately 4.5 hours and then it just became so predictable that I stopped. In fact, almost from the outset I guessed what was going to happen, although it wasn't a clear prediction, more a case of "I wonder if...". By the 4-hour mark, the crumbs were starting to be laid with so little skill that it became pretty obvious what was going to happen. If it had been better written, I might have continued to the end, to see how it was handled. But in the end I stopped, had my suspicions confirmed by Wikipedia, and moved on to another book.

The narrator does a decent job of bringing the characters to life, but the material was just boring and predictable.

Review

Exceptional. Even better than the film. Dealing with grief, of any sort, is not easy. This story captures what loss and it's consequences can amount to. As such it's a very powerful metaphor. I leave it to you to decide if it's possible that we could share the fate of Mr Landis.

Gripping dark thriller.

What did you love best about Shutter Island?

The complex characters, particularly Teddy. Haunted by myriad ghosts and has a thinly-veiled brutal nature.

What other book might you compare Shutter Island to and why?

The Magus by John Fowles. As with The Magus, in Shutter Island, reality is not as it appears.

Which scene was your favorite?

When Teddy sets fire to Dr Collies car. Disturbingly, I found this scene quite satisfying!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Definitely. I found Dolores interaction with the children shocking and macabre.

Any additional comments?

A thought-provoking novel.
