Summary

The much anticipated prequel to best seller Wool that takes us back to the beginnings of the silo. The full novel which brings together First, Second and Third Shift.

In a future less than fifty years away, the world is still as we know it. Time continues to tick by. The truth is that it is ticking away. A powerful few know what lies ahead. They are preparing for it. They are trying to protect us. They are setting us on a path from which we can never return. A path that will lead to destruction; a path that will take us below ground. The history of the silo is about to be written. Our future is about to begin.

Critic reviews

"The next Hunger Games" ( The Sunday Times)
"An epic feat of imagination. You will live in this world." (Justin Cronin)

"Brilliantly written...Howey creates a starkly believable and terrifying apocalypse. More and more layers of the dystopian world are unveiled, enticingly paving the way for the sequel Dust..." 5 Stars, (Sunday Express)

"We have been mesmerised with Hugh Howey's silo stories since we first laid eyes on book one in the trilogy...We'd recommend reading Wool first but you'll want to have this one ready as we guarantee you'll be unable to put it down. Perfect sunshine reading, wouldn't you say?" (Grazia Daily)

"Wool started life as a skilful, bleak, short story. Its premise and the dexterity with which Howey pulled it off drew him readers from outside the genre; Shift is one for those who are already hooked" (Culture, Sunday Times)

Refreshingly different

For reasons I still haven't worked out I ended up reading ( listening) to the Wool trilogy in reverse order, stupid I know but despite this I really enjoyed them! The descriptions of the silo and it's never ending stairwells, generator halls and server rooms are superb and if you have ever worked in a power plant or other process industry then it will put you right back there on the checker plate in the dirt, heat and noise of the place. Without a zombie in sight these books have all the drama and suspense you could want, with strong characters and a great story line - recommended

Great but shame Susannah Harker wasn't narrating

Would you listen to Shift again? Why?

I would - gives a greater insight into how "Wool" came to be.

What didn’t you like about Peter Brooke’s performance?

Didn't seem to get inside the characters to the same degree Susannah Harker did.

Narration is not for me

I am very sorry Peter, I am sure you are a lovely man but the narration style is not for me. I decided to skip book two and go straight onto three because I found the narration style so jarring. I am now listening to book two out of curiosity and finding it bearable if I speed it up 1.1x
I understand why they switched to an American and male voice for this part but I could go for someone with a more serious style. The Silo Saga is a thoughtful piece of work. The joke voices diminish the quality of the story.
Perhaps Peter was coached to pep it up because I saw some complaints that book one's narration felt flat. Unfortunately, it went too far in the other direction. FYI I really like the narration in books 1 and 3.

Absolutely intriguing and well read mostly

I absolutely loved it. Just towards the end it all felt a bit hopeless and stuck. This is coming from someone who hasn’t read/listened to the last book. It took such dark turns.. which is already quite dark in places! Hopefully a positive ending in the next book. Overall not as good as book one and felt like a middle book.. hopefully the last wraps it up nicely

Great layers of backstory for the first novel.

Really enjoyed this. Agree with other comments, listen 1.20 speed.
There are 2 separate stories going on that slowly converge

Appalling Narrator

I enjoyed the story but the narrator is truly awful. On behalf of British people everywhere please don’t ever try to do a British accent again.
Peter Brook this was a terrible effort.

Great book, odd pacing

Decided to read this series after hearing that it heavily inspired the Fallout video games.

It is a great novel, with wonderful writing, interesting characters, and a refreshing spin on the usual nuclear apocalypse trope.

The pacing is a little jarring, however. Just when the story starts to flow, the current shift ends, and the author insists on starting to build tension again with the next one. Makes the pace very stop-start.

The whys and hows!

Was a bit apprehensive about this book in the trilogy after reading the reviews but I did throughly enjoy it.
As others have stated would listen on 1.2 speed.

Perfect prequal to Wool

Where does Shift rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Shift is one of the best audio books I've listened to, always exciting and surprising, with well developed characters and great narration.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It's a book where emotional detachment isn't possible, not when you consider the scenarios presented in it and the possibility of human nature being more then capable of precipitating them.

Any additional comments?

How did the silos come about and how is it possible for people to have no memories of their human past and history, are just a few questions answered in this great prequel to Wool. I can't wait for the next instalment.

Definitely worth a listen

The narration is a bit odd, particularly given how well the first book was performed... but after a couple of chapters I didn't really notice it. The story was excellent and answered a lot of questions raised by the first book. Don't skip it!
