In the process, he absorbs their culture and learns native remedies that enrich the classical medical education he received at Edinburgh University. He marries a remarkable settler woman he had saved from illness. The details of how their deaf son manages to become a physician also, despite his handicap, and the story of how the Cole family is sucked into the bloody vortex of the Civil War and survives, makes an exceptional listening experience.

Super second Noah Gordon book!! So well read, the narrator matching the pace of the unfolding story, including chants. My only worry was his pronunciation of some English words…very strange. Had me feeling the narrator was very young and inexperienced with life?!? A wonderful listen all together

Having read the earlier book in the series. The second is even better, the narrator does an excellent job of portraying a fascinating tale once started it was difficult to break from the story which was both entertaining and weaves the story of the lives of those being portrayed and the events they go through I have no hesitation in recommending this book
