About this listen
1964 - London. Dolly Vincent is born to an East End gangster but is sent away for her own protection.
Mad Mick is hell-bent on his revenge and will stop at nothing to kill her. Estranged from her family, she becomes a successful barrister, but after defending a young Italian man she finds herself caught up in a secret held by a high court judge.
Tortured and left for dead, she flees London and heads to New York. Only the Vincents know where she is...but even they don't know the truth.
Now it’s 1990, and Francesca is back to face her demons...but this time she is not alone. One woman, three names.

The villians are real mustache-twirling nasties, without any redeeming features. If they seem to do anything nice it's only to ingratiate themselves in pursuit of some heinous end. Oh- and when I say villains, I mean the REAL villains, not the cheerful Cockney crew who just do a bit of illegal arms trading and never kill anyone unless they really deserve to die. These folk are to a man (and woman) rough diamonds with hearts of gold who look out for one another, fiercely tribal people who can be relied on to avenge any slight suffered by a member of their family. In the course of the book our Cockney heroes meet some nice powerful, wealthy Italian Americans who share their values, and form a formidable Anglo-American team.
In short it's a particular kind of escapist fantasy. I'm certainly not above a bit of escapist fantasy and I don't think books should necessarily be works of high art, so I'm not suggesting anybody should feel ashamed if they like the sound of this. For the right person it could be a good read / listen on the beach, but it's not going to be for everyone and it wasn't for me.
