Summary

Rooted in Evil by Ann Granger is set in the Cotswold village of Weston Saint Ambrose and features Inspector Jess Campbell and Superintendent Ian Carter in their fifth murder mystery.

Carl Finch is a desperate man. Cut out of his stepfather's will, he is heavily in debt, and unless he can persuade his stepsister Hattie to bail him out, he'll be in even more trouble.

Hattie's husband, Guy, has never liked Carl and wants his wife's inheritance for his own use, so Hattie agrees to meet Carl in secret to discuss his predicament. Little does she realise that when she arrives at their meeting point in Crooked Man Wood, she'll find Carl's dead body....

Mediocre

Rather poor and predictable crime story line. I wish there was not unnecessary bad language.

Good story - dreadful narrator

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I have enjoyed all of the other 'Campbell and Carter' books - narrated by Judith Boyd. They are usually 'easy listening' but I was struggling with this one. Julia Barrie's narration is dreadful.

What other book might you compare Rooted in Evil to, and why?

The other Campbell and Carter books move at a better pace due to a better narrator.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Julia Barrie give the characters overdone and dreadful accents, her reading is monotonous and plodding. Bring back Judith Boyd PLEASE!!

If this book were a film would you go see it?

No.

Narration not so good

Having listened to the previous 4 books and getting used to the voices of the characters, this book sat poorly with me as the voices are all wrong.

Slow

I normally really love Ann Granger books but was very disappointed I found it slow after an initial good start & then it just seemed to drag on. I prefer the narrator that has read the other Campbell & Carter. Overall I was disappointed.

Not up the usual standard

Would you try another book written by Ann Granger or narrated by Julia Barrie?

I normally love books by Ann Granger, but for some reason this one wasn't up to her usual standard. I think it was probably the quality of the reader/sound.

Although Julie Barrie has a pleasant voice, there were times when it was difficult to hear what she was saying, usually when she was taking the part of the leading female character. However when it was a male character her voice was so loud. I had to turn the volume up for the female roles, then down for the male, which made listening very difficult.

Judith Boyd was so much better, especially for the voice of Jess. So although I would try Ann's books again, sorry, but I won't be trying anything by Julia Barrie.

How could the performance have been better?

Bring back Judith Boyd.

I miss Judith Boyd

Although the reader performed perfectly adequately it was not the voice of the characters to which I have become accustomed. None of the characters came alive for me. This is a shame as I have enjoyed all of the Audible productions of Ann Granger's Mitchell and Markby books (bar one, which was by a different reader) and the first four Cambell and Carter mysteries - all performed perfectly by Judith Boyd. At least I can listen to them again.

Awful narration!

The sound quality and narration on this was so awful I couldn’t listen to the end? This was a different narrator to the other stories and it doesn’t work sorry.
