She's achingly close to taking charge of a media empire for her boss when she's sent to investigate a South Bronx charity that helps homeless people's pets. Has the charity made off with her boss's generous donation? And, who on earth is that gorgeous soft-butch veterinarian who looks as if she could toss a Shetland pony over one shoulder? Excellent
The writing is super, almost invisble. The plot, characters and situations are at turns horrific, disturbing, graphic, confusing and erotic - with a hint of humour along the way. It made me FEEL.
I was expecting something vaguely similar to Retirement Plan, but my goodness I was wrong. This had some real nasty, twisted, tortured and torturing souls. But there was hope - tantalising, often wondering if it was a false dawn, never completely certain how any given interaction would go. It was engrossing.
My emotions have been wrung from me over the past two and a bit days. I've not been able to read or listen to or think about any other story, and I may need to take a break for a day or two. This was intense.
I do not often make comparisons with other authors, but in this instance, I am making an exception. I am a huge fan of Cari Hunter, and the way their characters live and breathe, and lets you live outside your head and inside someone else's for a while. Lee Winter has that same ability.

Assassin with a heart
I loved this book it had everything you could want in a good book, it had a great story, lots of action, great chemistry between the two main characters.
Anais Inara Chase was fantastic at the narration; she did such a good job at the voices and put a lot of character into the book. I really enjoyed this book and will look out for this narrator, and of course I will keep buying Lee Winter books.
This book says is 12hrs and 5 mins but it’s actually less, as at the end of the book there is a short story sequel called ‘Love is not nothing’ which is approx 1hr 20mins. This carries on the story of the two main characters, which I thought was a fantastic way to end the book.

What a book
This book and audio is great. It has a story line that is engaging and full of suspense. The characters are complex and interesting and full of heart. So if you don’t want spoilers then don’t read but do read the book because it’s all types of awesome and so worth it. It’s full of suspense and romance and as usual Lee Winter’s clever writing makes you live the book like a movie.
In my opinion Requiem/Natalya’s biggest lie to herself is that she’s not a romantic, because for Emily Alison Ryan she is. From their first interaction you can sense that she feels differently about her. As the book and story progresses and we read more interactions between Natalya and Alison the delicious romantic tension just gets better and better. And then there’s the scene where Alison meets Requiem (in the horse house trailer) and BOOM that romantic tension becomes so bloody hot it burns. It’s then I personally realised that Req was a gonna. She was so in love but had no clue that she was or what real love even was, the only love she thought possible was to her music, but it got her hard. From then on the fever points are almost unbearable but in the best way. Once the MCs know each other’s identities the battles they have against what they do feel and what they should feel is just unreal. Alison’s journey is so good but the clever little mouse works it out quickly and manages to deal with it quite well. Requiem on the other hand does not have as easy a time with it. After being groomed her whole adult life to believe that emotions are weakness and that love is a wasted emotion that is beneath her, it took her a while to understand what was happening to her. But when she does oh she doesn’t disappoint and in true Req style she delivers one of the best lines most romantic lines without even knowing it “now here I am asking you to take a leap of faith with me” “to take a risk too, without you my music feels lifeless. My soul feels alive when you’re near” and then she follows it up with the most romantic rain kiss ever 😍😍 I mean who wouldn’t follow the scary assassin after that.
I love the book and audio and the short story Love Is Not Nothing that lets us revisit these ladies is breathtaking. The scene in the spa is just awesome and I love that we got to see how requiem has changed. Once again tho it’s the romance that blows me away. Again the line “it turns out the woman had been like the mouse Natalya dubbed her four years ago- she’d curled up small and soft close to Natalya’s heart and stubbornly refused to move. What defence did a world class Assassin have against that”
A long review I know. But I could of gone on longer. I have the worst book hangover now

Just doesn't float my boat.
This is the second Lee Winter audiobook I've bought and struggled with... And I got this in the hope that the previous one was just a blip, since people love her so much.
She's a good writer, accomplished and slick, but I have to conceded that I'm just not able to engage emotionally with Lee's 'Ice Queens'. I can't suspend my disbelief enough, my personal experience enough, to believe in them as attractive romantic leads. In real life I would run a mile from someone so cruel as the Ice Queen MC in this book. I just can't compute. So, it's hard to enjoy the story fully. This story is not just a romance, and there's plenty of plot to keep anyone's interest, but I doubt I'll rush to listen again, because it left me a bit cold.
In fact, the brief sequel at the end was far more engaging, and I was actually moved to care quite a lot, more than for the whole of the main book... Which tells me Lee Winter can write stuff that speaks to me too, so... Erm, sorry to leave a less than glowing review... But I thought I'd offer an alternative thought to all the positive ones... 🙄
This is just a taste thing I think... I need to be able to love my two romantic leads... You can't please everyone I guess!
The reader is great... Really excellent.

Perfection.
This is the best love story I’ve ever listened to. If I read it, would’ve been the best I’ve read. It is a thriller, action movie, lesbian romance all in one fantastic book. If that’s intriguing, get this book ASAP. If crime, mobsters, serial killers, and or lesbians secretly intrigue you (not in the dark sense, in the fascination sense), this book is your dream come true. I’m sitting at 4 minutes remaining and find myself sad it’s over.
Thank you Lee Winter, Anais Ibarra Chase, and Audible for allowing me to indulge in this fantastic book.

A Captivating Story!
I have truly become a fan of Lee Winter’s books. She’s an amazing writer and develops interesting characters. In this book Requiem/Natalia is a freelance assassin and a concert cellist. She lives for the thrill of the hunt of her next target and her music.Requiem is a loner and someone who’d doesn’t believe in showing her feelings. And then there is Allison, also a loner, and a woman so many have underestimated. Their story is definitely worth reading. And Anais Ibarra Chase is a superb narrator, who brings both characters to life. Get this book!

Struggling to not finish in one settings without life getting in the way. Intralling and breathtaking trilling rational thoughts. In this undeniably beautiful way of thinking story. I have lost words on how the story took me away and A. Chase read it was just BRILLIANT. There is nothing in love that cannot be given freely for a good heart. Edgy and compelling storytelling
I'm glad I got past the distasteful sadomasochism scene and stuck with the story. Five star plot, characters, suspense and action. Looking forward to more audiobooks from this author and a talented narrator. I prefer the narrators with Aussie or Kiwi accents. (Pls choose those over the less talented genre standby for lesbian romance in American English.)

I enjoyed the australian reading and variety of voices for the characters. Anais Inara Chase has a lovely voice, but it was read way too slow for me. I occasionally had to listen at 1.1x speed. I got used to it eventually as the story went along.
Natalya Tsvetnenko aka Requiem (41): She’s hot but she’s the cold blooded daughter of a military man. Trained in the art of cello and lethal assassination, specializing in the corrupt aussie underworld. Often going after vial men. Now hired for a no questions asked kill at double the fee. (I love an ice queen but she tittered on the edge of unlikable at times)
Alison Ryan (34): Forced to take care of her ill/acid tongued mother, government worker, lover of classical music, with no dirt on her personnel file. Very unlike any of Natalya’s marks. At first glance she’s described by the assassin as a “tiny mouse of a creature” that “broadcasted helplessness”.
What a pair…
I love the hold Alison has over Natalya despite Natalya thinking she’s always in control and not even being able to explain it herself. There’s a plot switch starting at chapter 19 to a flashback from Alison’s POV. I saw a lot of reviews saying this change lulled the story for them but I disagree. I think it opened things up (especially the mystery). I always love seeing different side of the story.
Overall it was very well written as all Lee Winter tales are. But, as I said, the pace of the story and performance were a little too slow for my taste. First time I had to take breaks which is surprising compared to my other experiences with LW’s books. Still I’m glad I chose this book. This was a cool twist from my usual genre, wlw romance, with the mystery/crime plot.
I liked the music motif. How it related to Natalya’s values and her/Alison’s different views.

What I expect from Lee Winter..
I’ve read most of Lew Winter’s books & this one was right along the same lines of the rest. It’s always well written with a unique plot/setting, which makes it enjoyable. But nearly every single story features an untouchable “ice queen” who others hate but ends up being melted & beguiled by their complete opposite. Requiem is the most distinctive character & yet I feel like I’ve read/heard this story before because it’s so similar to the other books. I still gave it overall 4 star rating because if it’s your first exposure to Winter you’ll likely enjoy it quite a bit.
Also, this narrator just didn’t do it for me. The audio version could’ve been MUCH shorter if her narration was so dang slow & at times extremely flat. The drama of the story was missing from her telling of it. I actually had to backtrack & re-listen to a couple chapters because I dozed off more than once. Her voice & cadence quite literally put me to sleep. I may have overlooked the redundancy of Winter’s storyline had the narrator been different & caused me to get a little more lost in the story like in Red Files & Under Your Skin with Victoria Mei. I’m not a fan of Angela Dawe either so after suffering through audio version of Breaking Character & seeing Dawe was the narrator for all other Winter Audibles I decided to just read her other books. I rate them much higher that way lol sorry just not my preference
