Summary

When death comes suddenly, and grief sits thick, secrets hide, and ghosts remain.

After moving back to her ancestral home with her parents, April finds more than just her beloved grandmother waiting for her. For more than a century, the rural Suffolk house has been waiting, guarding its secrets.

Discovering a lost photograph of a mysterious young woman, fate draws April deep into her family’s history and the life of her great-great-grandmother, Annabelle.

Through visions, dreams, and Annabelle’s diary, April finds grief, secrets, and family loyalties that stretch beyond even love’s limits.

Piecing together memories and her connection to the past, April must unfold the mystery of her family legacy and lay the ghosts to rest.

A gentle tale of family ties

I enjoyed the story as it connected to the generations through over 100 years. The story is about love between sisters, mothers, daughters, and grandmothers as well as romantic love. It involved tragic losses and heartbreak. The narration is quite slow so I change the speed to 1.1 and this was better. This story leave you thinking about what happens when we die and if we stay or move on.

Wow what a beautiful story.

This is a must read . / listen. I really felt the turmoil of April as she realized that she had lived before as Annabelle all the love and loss of her beloved sister Emily and her husband Richard. the bond she had with her grandmother was truly wonderful. I don't want to spoil it for anyone so I shall leave it at that . I cannot praise it enough it will make you cry. and feel warm .

Masterful, emotive storytelling

"Love does not ask for permission..."
From the poignant opening prologue, what masterfully unfolds is an intense, raw, and at times savagely emotive story dealing with the conflict between loss and finding, grief and comforting certainty, but above all, love shared between families a century apart. Part time-slip, shared memory, and reincarnation of beautifully crafted characters, all with their flaws and hardships, what we experience is a novel that sensitively and richly illustrates communal experience in the face of loss and the coming to terms that follows in order for the past and present protagonists to find comfort, resolution and peace.

There are moments of such joy and sadness that will affect you long after the final, expertly crafted denouement comes to a satisfying conclusion. The audiobook, powerfully narrated and skillfully performed by Joanna Swan adds a layer of immersion, bringing the characters to life, including those whose time on earth has long passed.

Highly recommended for those looking for more answers between chapters, cleverly unfurled at a pace that satisfies curiosity and keeps pages turning. Genuinely sad (but happy!) when the words came to an end, the author's other Gothic works are a great next read.

A great listen,

This recording is very evocative of (a) East Anglia, (b) The Past and (c) Christmas. I'd recommend it for fans of historic romance, ghost stories or even genealogy as it has a strong "family tree" plotline. Superb narration by Joanna Swan - it's lovely to hear proper authentic East Anglian accents for the characters - no "west country or pirate" here!
