About this listen

Another outstanding regional historical saga from the Queen of Lincolnshire-based fiction.

A young girl stands alone in the cobbled market place of a small Lincolnshire town, bedraggled, soaked through and very afraid. Who is she? Where has she come from and from whom is she running away?

No one knows or cares. Only kindly farmer, Eddie Appleyard, recognises something in the girl that touches his heart. In a drunken haze and scarcely realising what he is doing, Eddie takes her home even though his wife is a tyrant, who will believe the worst.

'Is this your fancy piece?' Bertha accuses and turns Anna out into the cold, wet night. Eddie hides the girl in the hayloft and, later, in a tumbledown shepherd's cottage that becomes her new home. Anna's arrival will change their lives; Eddie's, Bertha's and even that of their young son, Tony, torn between his warring parents and the mysterious stranger.

It will take years for the secrets of Anna's former life to be revealed, but Bertha bides her time and awaits her moment, little realising the tragedy her vengeance will unleash.

This is my second audio from Margaret Dickinson. I found myself looking for jobs (excuses) to do, to have a listen to this book. It was quite unpredictable which was a first for these types of novels. I’m also a die hard Anne Dover fan & was wondering how Nicolette McKenzie would narrate this book. Oh my she was fabulous. It was like listening to a play. Loved it & sad that is finished. 🥹

A great listen

Great story and read so very well. It's a very addictive storyline makes you need more. Very heartfelt and emotional in a good way. The author has pained a wonderful picture for your imagination to run away with itself.

A great story with good character development. Whilst you think you can guess what may have happened or what may happen, it doesn't always pan out that way. A great story that can easily while a way time doing any jobs in the meantime.

Enchanting story taking you on many ups and downs

3/4 into the book, it goes back in time to tell how Anna and her daughter Maisie get abused and raped. And there is also the murder of the loving grandfather and the killing of the loyal farm dog.
If I want to hear horrible stuff and doom and gloom, I could just turn on the news. For me, books are escapism. This one wasn’t. I just wanted it to be over. Note to self: If a book is not enjoyable, either from the start of some way in, just stop listening and get a refund.
