Summary
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Pierce Brown’s relentlessly entertaining debut channels the excitement of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card.
“Red Rising ascends above a crowded dystopian field.”—USA Today
Adapted from the novel and produced with a full cast of actors, immersive sound effects and cinematic music!
“I live for the dream that my children will be born free,” she says. “That they will be what they like. That they will own the land their father gave them.”
“I live for you,” I say sadly.
Eo kisses my cheek. “Then you must live for more.”
Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he toils willingly, trusting that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.
But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and lush wilds spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.
Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies... even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

Reliving the excitement of Red Rising again
This is my favourite series of all time and I was super excited to see graphic audio bring it to life. Overall the performance was extremely enjoyable, I think every fan of the series should have a listen. In my opinion it just highlights how amazing these books would be in a cinema format, at times I felt like I was in the same room as the characters and could picture the scenes so clearly.
The voice actor for Darrow did a phenomenal job, the switch between his red and gold self was seamless, and as well as his interactions with the other characters. I also really enjoyed Mustang and Nero.
Some of the other reviews have highlighted the discrepancies with the accents which I do agree with, would have preferred Irish actors for some of the red characters as it really does distract from the performance, particularly Eo and Harmony. Another issue I found was some of the voice actors for characters like Cassius, Jackal and Fitchner sounded older than the characters actually are, it did throw me off at times, especially for Cassius. I would hope this could be changed for the next book. I wasn't the biggest fan of Roque either, he didn't quite sound as I imagined him but that may be down to personal preference.
But overall I had an amazing time listening to this, even though I've read the series about 3 times already, this stopped me in my tracks more than once. I genuinely am looking forward to Golden Son.

An Excellent Retelling of One of My Favourites
I wasn't sure what I'd make of a cast narrating Red Rising. Tim Gérard Reynolds did such an outstanding job in the first audio book release.
I'm happy to say this was amazing. They captured each character perfectly. the music and sound effects add a new layer of detail that enhances the listening experience.
I've just downloaded part 2. Looking forward to getting started.

If you like stories when people talk through internal monologue most of the way through
Performance is way too dramatic. The story has so many ideas crammed into it that it is very hard to follow. I feel that nothing really links well enough. Really not for me. I don’t see any resemblance in what others have reviewed about it.

Surprised by how good the Dramatised Version is
Book is a little predictable so far but really enjoying it. Everyone is comparing it to Spartacus and yeah Roman theme, slaves I get it, but it’s NOT Spartacus. Well worth a punt

Red women accents are atrocious
Story is incredible but listening to character like harmony and eo became increasingly difficult due to instability to stick to an Irish accent. Sounded like a Hollywood actor doing an Irish accent based on how they think a leprechaun sounds

Fantastic
I hope they end up doing this on all the books in the series. It’s engrossing in a different way than the original series was. And it’s almost like looking into the story from a slightly different angle

Wasn't sure I liked a "dramatized adaptation" as much as a traditional, read by one voice production. It has grown on me and now I'm really enjoying it. The production quality is very good. The music and different actors' voices ad another dimension.

Performance is cinematic, story a bit derivative
The sound effects and music often added to the storytelling, but sometimes the music felt completely overly dramatic and mismatched compared to what was being described. It was like the music was trying to make you feel the scene was more epic than what was actually happening. Didn’t happen too many times though. And the full cast of actors do a great job with the characterizations. Except the main character Darrow, his speaking voice sounds older and different than his narration voice which is jarring. In fact all the actors sound like full grown adults while aren’t these all meant to be teenagers? Again they all do a great job with the distinct voices and making them sound sinister and sympathetic etc when needed. But overall was a bit weird when you notice it. The story has a quick pace to it, it moves and the tension is great. The twists keep you listening. But I couldn’t help thinking how similar many of the parts feel to other books like Hunger Games and even parts were like Matrix. The setting of Mars also doesn’t quite seem that consequential. They never risk being exposed to the vacuum of space, or other harsh realities of being on another planet. Occasionally low gravity plays a role, but only when it suits the action to have someone do a flip, which again doesn’t feel consequential. The whole thing about them mining and preparing for the Society and the Golds feels like it could just as easily take place on earth somewhere. Maybe this will play a bigger role in the next books, but it should still have more consequence in this first book in my opinion. The suspense building in the end and the cliffhanger were ok, but feels a bit like a cash grab to get me to buy the next book to find out what happens and ends pretty abruptly without much immediate resolution.

Hooked
I am loving the revamp with the dramatized version of red rising. I was skeptical about reinvesting in it even after getting the first audible version and the hard copy — but it’s worth it and now I can’t wait to listen to all the books this way!

I don't like that it's split into two books. Seems like a cash grab.

Great audio theatre
The first two hours were boring and very predictable, but then the story really takes off and I could not stop listening! The format with the full cast is great and now I am waiting for Audible to purchase the remaining parts with full cast.

I wish every book had this version! I was immersed from the beginning. The different actors and sound effects have changed the audiobook game.
