About this listen
Two men, a bitter rivalry, and a quarter-century of unspeakable horrors. Herbert West’s crimes against nature are well-known to those familiar with the darkest secrets of science and resurrection. Obsessed with finding a cure for mankind’s oldest malady, death itself, he has experimented upon the living and dead, leaving behind a trail of monsters, mayhem, and madness. But the story of his greatest rival has never been told until now.
Dr. Stuart Hartwell, a colleague and contemporary of West, sets out to destroy him by uncovering the secrets of his terrible experiments, only to become what he initially despised: a reanimator of the dead. For more than twenty years, the two scientists race each other to master the mysteries of life...and unlife. From the grisly battlefields of the Great War to the haunted coasts of Dunwich and Innsmouth, from the halls of fabled Miskatonic University to the sinking of the Titanic, their unholy quests leave their mark upon the world and create monsters of them both.

Oliver Wyman (an Audie-award winner multiple times and voice for numerous characters on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles television series) performs this entertaining homage to H. P. Lovecraft’s imaginative horrors. The time is early 20th century, a period abundant in drama both real (World War I, the sinking of the Titanic) and imagined (a "tied" World Series, Charlie Chan’s honeymoon). Dr. Stuart Harwell finds himself in a race against Dr. Herbert West, a man he loathes for his vision and the resulting monstrous results from experiments to let the dead walk again. One of the horrid results from Harwell’s own experiments is the discovery of how much he has become exactly like what he most despises.

A jolly good listen
To anyone who has seen the movie series. This seems to be the original work.
A bit more detail and considerably less comedy.
Quite a story.

That was a surprisingly good listen!
Great stuff written in words I had long forgotten as well at times 😀 Lovecraftianesque like a cross between Frankenstein and Reanimator with its own ideas of course. Currently a free listen what can go wrong? Onto the next one for me.

Great story (however, before you buy)
A great story but it is vital that you have read Lovecraft's stories beforehand.
The storu takes place parallel to Lovecraft's Herbert West Reanimator but it also weaves in many of lovecraft's other stories and connects them into one cohesive storyline. That is, if you have actually read lovecraft's work beforehand.
This story is best enjoyed if you know all the references to Lovecraft's work, which includes:
Herbert West Reanimator, The Shadow out of time, Cool air, The Dunwich horror, The shadow over Innsmouth, The dreams in the Witch house, The music of Erich Zann and any story featuring Lovecraft's character Randolph Carter.
There are many other references to other stories such as From Beyond and The color out of space and even non Lovecraft characters like Charlie Chan but those aren't vital to understanding the story but the stories mentioned earlier are integral parts of the narrative.
Reading this without having read any of Lovecraft's work or even only having read Herbert West Reanimator is like watching Avengers endgame without having watched any of the previous Marvel movies.
It is a very enjoyable listening experience if you are already familiar with these stories.

A ripping Lovecraftian yarn
I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook, which is filled with so many different references from HP Lovecraft's works along with other contemporary references.
A great read/listen for anyone with even a passing interest in Lovecraft's works or similar fiction.
The narrator was fantastic, doing a great job of bringing the characters to life without resorting to overacting at any point.
