Summary

The No. 2 SUNDAY TIMES Bestseller

An Observer Best Debut of the Year

One of the most hotly anticipated, hilarious and addictive debut novels of the year, from Schitt’s Creek and Workin’ Moms screenwriter and electric new voice in fiction, Monica Heisey.

I feel like when you get a divorce everyone’s wondering how you ruined it all, what made you so unbearable to be with. If your husband dies, at least people feel bad for you.

Maggie’s marriage has ended just 608 days after it started, but she’s fine – she’s doing really good, actually. Sure, she’s alone for the first time in her life, can’t afford her rent and her obscure PhD is going nowhere . . . but at the age of twenty-nine, Maggie is determined to embrace her new status as a Surprisingly Young Divorcée™.

Soon she’s taking up ‘sadness hobbies’ and getting back out there, sex-wise, oversharing in the group chat and drinking with her high-intensity new divorced friend Amy. As Maggie throws herself headlong into the chaos of her first year of divorce, she finds herself questioning everything, including: Why do we still get married? Did I fail before I even got started? How many Night Burgers until I’m happy?

Laugh-out-loud funny, razor sharp and painfully relatable, Really Good, Actually is an irresistible debut novel about the uncertainties of modern love, friendship and happiness from a stunning new voice in fiction, Monica Heisey.

Critic reviews

"Monica Heisey’s observations on men, women, friendship, love and sex are equal parts hilarious and profound." (Dolly Alderton, author of Everything I Know About Love)

"Hilarious, heart-warming, wise." (Paula Hawkins, author of The Girl on the Train)

"Monica Heisey is so funny and entertaining it might be tempting to call her a humorist. But all the best humorists transcend the label, and she is one of those." (Lauren Oyler, author of Fake Accounts)

Loved it!

This was the perfect cold weather read . A warm, charming, hilariously funny look at devorce . The realisation that friendship and relationship are two entirely different things. We can be messy , life is often messy but even when it is there is laughter to be had.

Really just ok

Really wanted to like this but wasn't anything special - dislikeable characters throughout, with few redeemable features

Sweet listen when you’ve just recovered from a breakup

I have just recovered from a divorce and found the book very comforting. A lot of things the main character does we’re things I’ve done and I loved finding myself in it.

Pretty depressing

I found this book self indulgent, slow and quiet boring. I continually hoped it would pick up but unfortunately it didn’t.

Maybe I'm too old 😂

I heard amazing things about this book but was left a bit disappointed. Didn't love the characters and there wasn't loads to the story. Maybe being a decade older that the main character was the issue, there we're definitely moments of resonance but mostly I was just irritated. I found it all a bit too "millennial" for this ancient 38 year old 😏

Highly entertaining

Great story, relatable and whitty. Excellently performed by the reader. Like a warm, humorous blanket for anyone who has undergone a major life change in their relative youth

Is there something wrong with me?

Despite the fact I have a strong sense of fun and humour, and the fact I’ve been there, I really can’t rate this book. I found it tedious, old ground trodden and unforgivingly introspective. I’d like to have told her to find a good psychoanalyst. In fact, thousands of books on, it’s the first time I’ve ever written a review on here.
