Editor reviews

Mr. Thomson is a diligent student at Cambridge University, and while in search of a place in which to rest and relax, happens upon an inn in Suffolk. He spends his idyllic days reading, writing, and walking the countryside. One day, he decides to explore the inn, and when one room catches his fancy, it leads to a terrifying encounter that he cannot explain. Stephen Critchelow masterfully builds the tension of M. R. James' short story, employing an early matter-of-factness that increases in intrigue before dissolving into fright as Thomson comes face-to-face with the truth that lives inside that room.
