About this listen
Told in the voice of a young soldier, the story follows 24 hours in his life at the front during World War I, and captures his memories as he looks back over his life.
Full of stunningly researched detail and engrossing atmosphere, the book leads to a dramatic and moving conclusion. Both a love story and a deeply moving account of the horrors of the First World War, this audiobook will reach everyone from 9 to 90.

Beautifully written
This story is beautifully written and narrated, and mingles the story of the happiness of a close loving family and the horror of the trenches. It is quite the saddest thing I have ever read, you'll need some tissues on hand!

Should be part of the school syllabus.
Such a moving story told simply and with great effect. It is the story of the many who go unrecorded because they are not rich or “important “.
It is a story as important today as then, the cast of players has changed but the story has not.
I was moved to tears at the end.

War doesn't kill love ever
This book is exactly what you think of when you ask to be told a story. My heart will stay there for a while longer.

A truthful, how it really was, story of WW1
When I first bought this book I wasn’t sure if it would be my cup of tea but I was hooked as soon as the narrator spoke.
This is a story of a plain soldier and his brother on the front line one of whom ended up being appallingly treated by the high ranking upper crust who probably never even saw a battlefield.

Great story
I have written very few reviews, but this really deserves one. It has cruelty, the brutality of war, but a great deal of love in it. It combines war and life in Devon for rather downtrodden farmworkers. Not all the cruelty is on the war front.
