About this listen

The second volume in the Captive Prince trilogy.

With their countries on the brink of war, Damen and his new master, Prince Laurent, must exchange the intrigues of the palace for the sweeping might of the battlefield as they travel to the border to avert a lethal plot.

Forced to hide his identity, Damen finds himself increasingly drawn to the dangerous, charismatic Laurent. But as the fledgling trust between the two men deepens, the truth of secrets from both their pasts is poised to deal them the crowning death blow.

Identifying rather too closely with Laurent!

I found this to be a perfect union . . . of book and performance!

Edge of my seat

Beautifully written sequal that left me devouring chapter after chapter. Always enjoy lgbt+ novels but they're not always well written like this one is. It's a great read, the narrator was brilliant and the story is gripping.

⭐️ Superb Middle Book ⭐️

🎧 Where Captive Prince is dark focusing on the debauchery of human nature, Prince’s Gambit has human virtue beginning to check and challenge cruelty and human vices. The book's more hopeful tone is with its humour written in clever turns of phrasing or the use of repetition. Wonderfully, the narrator gets it and conveys it pitch perfectly! Aside from this, Stephen Bel Davies’ work on inflections and considered pauses wonderfully hint at people, moments, or even throwaway dialogue that have pay offs! A lot of the story is shown rather than told so that we too can assess what is going on because, dear readers, Damen is an unreliable narrator. Thankfully, Mr Davies’ brings so much to life that you cannot help but see it and then just enjoy yourself!

Shifting gears, there are multiple females visible in every layer of society! 💫 Best of all, not only do they have independent agency but they are also pivotal to the plot. It so refreshing when gender is well represented and then presented as a non-issue in an MM centric story.

Overall, Prince’s Gambit is that unicorn of a middle book – it is better than the first and TBH my favourite of the Trilogy! It has a strong plot with intrigue that is intricate without convolution; characters are developed; foreshadowing is delicious; the stellar pacing keeps a relentless push forward; and the writing here is flawless. If this is still not enough to convince you to spend the credit, I will just leave this here: C S Pacat has written very elegant sex scenes. Indeed. Thank me later! 😊

The concept is interesting and reasonable well written. The narration is good though not to my taste.

Enjoyed

A very character lead story. But I love that. Was stronger than the first too.

One of the best book(serie)s I've read

The storytelling imperceptibly intertwines you within until you suddenly realize you're at the end of the book
