About this listen

This novel was previously published as Imperfect Women in hardback.

Friends tell each other everything. Don't they?

Everyone wants perfection. But there is no such thing.

Nancy has the perfect life. She is bright, beautiful and rich with an adoring husband and daughter. At least that's what it seems on the outside to her two best friends. But then Nancy is murdered. And as the lies start to unravel, they realise they never knew their perfect friend at all. She clearly had as many secrets as they do....

Araminta Hall’s last novel, Our Kind of Cruelty on Audible before and enjoyed it, I had high expectations of Imperfect Women. These expectations were only raised when I heard via Twitter Elisabeth Moss has optioned the TV/film rights. In such circumstances I’ve frequently found raised hopes can end up dashed when the actual novel doesn’t live up to its hype - but the opposite was true for me in this case: it’s my favourite of Araminta’s books so far. The book is divided into thirds and we follow the story of three women, Eleanor, Mary and Nancy, who meet at university and remain friends for decades afterwards, so at the start of the novel they’ve known each other about 30 years. The book opens with a death so is a psychological thriller in terms of genre, but it is certainly a cut above most that are out there because it has a depth of character and breadth of theme that I find is sometimes lacking in genre fiction. It tackles big themes such as sexual politics and moral culpability and is narrated brilliantly by Helen Keeley. If, like me, you enjoy authors such as Lucy Atkins, Sarah Vaughan, Adele Parks and Lisa Jewell, this will tick all the right boxes. Highly recommended.

The perfect staycation novel - a psychological thriller with added oomph

I enjoyed this book wholeheartedly. It’s sensitive, shocking, cruel and kind - page after page. Thanks to the author for putting pen to paper on this and allowing me to join Ellie, Nancy and Mary who were loved.

What a grim story. Self indulgent and shallow characters who are hard to sympathise with. The ending felt tacked-on. A bit of a slog.

Grim

Not the gripping tale I expected- too much repetitive self obsessed introspection from the annoying women. Not recommended.

A disappointment
