About this listen
Eva - known to all as Lovey - grew up safe and secure in Oxford, Mississippi, surrounded by a rich literary history and her mother's stunning flower gardens. But a shed fire, and the injuries that it caused, seemed to change everything...especially when her older sister, Bitsy, blamed Lovey for the irreparable damage.
Bitsy became the cheerleader. The homecoming queen. The perfect Southern belle who could do no wrong. All the while, Lovey served as the family scapegoat, always bearing the brunt when Bitsy threw blame her way.
At 18, suffocating in her sister's shadow, Lovey turned down a marriage proposal and fled to Arizona - a place as far from Mississippi as she could find.
In time, she became a successful advertising executive and a weekend yoga instructor, carving a satisfying life for herself, free from Bitsy's vicious lies. But now that she's turning 45, Lovey is feeling more alone than ever and questioning the choices that have led her here.
When she gets a call from her father insisting that she come home three weeks early for her parents' fiftieth anniversary, Lovey is at wits' end. She's about to close the biggest contract of her career, and there's a lot on the line. But despite the risks, her father's words, "family first", draw her right back to the red dirt roads of Mississippi.
Lovey is welcomed home by a secret project - a memory garden her father has planned as an anniversary surprise for her mother. As she helps create this sacred space, Lovey begins to rediscover her roots, learning to live perennially in spite of life's many trials and tragedies.
Years ago, Lovey chose to leave her family and the South far behind. But now that she's returned, she's realizing things at home were not always what they seemed.

Poignant Story
I listened to this book on Audible. The narration was really good and brought the characters to life. I found the story on the whole a little bland for my liking. Not to say it wasn't a good story because it was. It just wasn't my cup of tea I think.

🤢🤢🤢🤮
It's like someone Googled inspirational quotes and wrote them all out one after the other and called it a book.
Trite, corny, predictable nonsense with stupid characters I couldn't connect to. I could see that they were supposed to be developing but it was all too predictable and contrived, not to mention the fact that the supposed growth seemed more like enabling toxic behaviour, but okay.
I'm so sick of these doormat female characters. Most of the time all that's needed to prevent a lifetime full of problems for them and others is to tell the truth. If someone is pointing at you and blaming you for something that you didn't do, why would you just sit there quietly?? If your conniving sister has been setting you up and lying about you to everyone your whole life, you bloody well tell them "no, that's not true!".
I'm so sick of this ridiculous message in books - if someone is literally abusing you and, despite trying to talk to them a few times they're still just as horrible to you, you absolutely do not need to keep coming at them open and with love!! Wtaf like?? I don't care if it's your sister or mother or lifelong friend, if someone is continuously abusive to you you get the hell away from them!! It is categorically not on you to get them to see the light or whatever.
That is such a dangerous and damaging message to be giving and it's maybe the 6th time I've come across it this year alone.
Narration was good though.

Too Christian for me. but it was my mistake. slopp
Decent narrator but everything was too sweet. It didn't work as literature. Maybe it works for people with faith. Main character I irritating.
